Zermatt is located 1,620 metres above sea level at the top of the Vispa valley, and surrounded by some of Switzerland's tallest mountains. The peaks that tower over the city include some of Europe's most demanding high altitude climbs, including the Breithorn, Monte Rosa, Castor and Pollux and the pièce de resistance - the Matterhorn. The town is famous for its glamorous hotels, superb skiing and challenging mountaineering, as well as that everlasting chocolate-box image of pretty little wooden chalets and snow-capped peaks. If it's an archetypal Swiss mountain resort you're after, Zermatt is very hard to beat.
