A visit to Frankfurt may not seem like a staple of Germany tours. After all, with the bigger cities such as Berlin, Munich and Hamburg attracting much of the attention, it can be easy to overlook this city of more than 690,000 when planning your itinerary. However, it has just as much to offer as its larger neighbors and will certainly stand out as a highlight of your tour of Germany. When planning your visit to Frankfurt, there are a few destinations that should not be missed.
Like many cities in Europe, Frankfurt is peppered with beautiful, centuries-old buildings and the stunning Frankfurt Cathedral. Built in the 14th century, this enormous church is located in the center of the city and is among its most recognizable structures. The cathedral also stands out because Frankfurt is well populated with many impressive pieces of contemporary architecture including the Commerzbank Tower, which is the tallest skyscraper in the city at 850 feet.
Architecture is not all Frankfurt has to offer. The city is also home to many bustling shopping streets including Zeil, which has been one of the busiest streets in Germany for more than 150 years. Whether you come away with a purchase or not, walking through this hub of activity will surely leave a lasting impression.
Before departing Frankfurt and continuing on your tour of Germany, you should make a point to visit the Main Tower. Aside from being impressive to look at, this all glass structure is a popular tourist draw because you can ride the elevator up more than 600 feet to the top. Once there, you're presented with the some of the most spectacular views of the city you're likely to encounter.
Look down in wonder at Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Westminster and St Paul’s Cathedral from your glass-walled pod on the London Eye, then gaze out over the Louvre and the Champs-Elysees from the top of the Eiffel Tower.
The scent of rich pine forests lingers in the breeze as the 13th-century ruins of Turaida Castle are revealed before your eyes in the lush Gauja River valley in a medieval sanctuary untouched by the march of time.
The aroma of dark roasted Viennese coffee hangs thick in the air as you tread the cobblestone laneways and bask in the elegant architecture, atmospheric cafes and refined restaurants in one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe.
