Gaviota State Park takes its name from the Spanish word for seagull, given to the area by soldiers of the Portola Expedition who supposedly killed a seagull while camping here in 1769. Marked by a tall Southern Pacific railroad trestle that crosses Gaviota Creek high above the day-use parking lot, the park is a popular spot for swimming, picnicking, surf fishing and camping, despite high winds that often blow through the area. A pier on the west end of the beach is used by anglers, and scuba divers and surfers use a boat hoist on the pier to access the waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Visitors can explore the rugged upland portions of the park from a trailhead in the parking area. Ambitious hikers can climb to Gaviota Peak that offers a spectacular view of the coast and the Channel Islands.

Begin your journey along the Hwy 1 with its beautiful scenery as it makes its way north while you enjoy the views of the Pacific Ocean. A couple of hours ahead take in history as ttowering above the town of San Simeon, Hearst Castle one of the town’s most treasured sights and one of California’s most visited landmarks. It is perched atop rolling hills overlooking the picturesque Pacific Ocean. Hearst Castle’s storied history dates back to 1865. Also in the town of San Simeon visit the Coastal Discover Center at San Simeon Bay. The center celebrates the connection between land and sea with interactive exhibits, educational programs and area events. Free to the public and open all year long, the Coastal Discovery Center is the perfect way to gain a more in-depth view of the area’s natural history and efforts to preserve the breathtaking beauty that surrounds you.
Continue your day as you proceed further north and come to the world famous Big Sur. Today, Big Sur refers to that 90-mile stretch of rugged and awesomely beautiful coastline between Carmel to the north and San Simeon to the south. Highway 1 winds along its length and is flanked on one side by the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains and on the other by the rocky Pacific Coast. Big Sur has attained a worldwide reputation for its spectacular beauty. Hiking, backpacking and scenic driving are major recreational activities. This breathtaking stretch of coastline has something to offer any visitor.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located on the site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row on the Pacific Ocean shoreline in Monterey. It holds 35,000 plants and animals representing 623 species. Among the aquarium's numerous exhibits, two are of particular note: The centerpiece of the Ocean's Edge Wing is a 33-foot (10m) high 300,000 gallon tank for viewing California coastal marine life. Sealife on exhibit includes stingrays, jellyfish, sea otters, an 11 lb. lobster over 50 years old, and numerous other native marine species, which can be viewed above and below the waterline. Visitors are able to inspect the creatures of the kelp forest at several levels in the building. Transportation is not included.
Make your way to Pier 33 and board a ferry to Alcatraz in the morning and ride across the bay to Alcatraz Island. Then in the afternoon come on an insider's tour of San Francisco. The tour begins after a short walk up a hill and into the prison, where you will receive a headset for Doing Time: The Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour, an award-winning audio presentation which includes 45 minutes of recordings of actual guards and inmates. Then at the end of the tour, you'll have plenty of time to explore Alcatraz Island to your heart's content, just make sure you don't miss the last ferry back; you wouldn't want to be spending the night there.
Then in the afternoon, it's time for some leisurely exploration of San Francisco. We'll spend some time at some of its main attractions including the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach, the Market Street Cable Cars, Lombard Street, Coit Tower, Twin Peaks, Fisherman's Wharf, the San Francisco Giants Baseball Stadium and Candlestick Park, just to name a few. Your informative and friendly guide will also tell you all about the fascinating history of San Francisco, going as far back as the 1849 Gold Rush, down to the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake when the whole city was literally covered in rubble.

Today self-drive to Napa Valley. The self-drive will take approximately 4 hours.
Only 15 minutes outside of Napa, you will think you are a world away as you cycle along the vine-covered hills of Carneros. With a cool afternoon breeze from the San Francisco Bay, this region is perfect for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Enjoy a bike ride along one of the quietest and most beautiful cycling spots in the Napa Valley – quiet, little traffic, and small family-owned wineries with top-notch wines. You will ride along rolling hills teeming with vineyards. On a clear day you may even be able to catch a glimpse of the San Francisco Bay. Your guide will talk about local history and will help you understand the process of growing grapes and making wine. Cycle along quiet country lanes to visit small, family-owned wineries in this area reminiscent of Burgundy. You will have the opportunity to taste some of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for which the Carneros region is famous, as well as some new and unusual varietals such as Syrah, Pinot Meunier, or Cabernet Franc. The route takes you along rolling hills through wide open spaces surrounded by lush green vineyards. Savour a Wine Country picnic lunch stop enroute at a great, scenic winery.
After lunch, visit one or two more wineries, keeping an eye out for birds of prey and other local wildlife. After the final winery stop, head back to Moore’s Landing at about 3:30pm. Here your guide will bid you a fond farewell after your active adventure of the day!
