Gaviota State Park takes its name from the Spanish word for seagull, given to the area by soldiers of the Portola Expedition who supposedly killed a seagull while camping here in 1769. Marked by a tall Southern Pacific railroad trestle that crosses Gaviota Creek high above the day-use parking lot, the park is a popular spot for swimming, picnicking, surf fishing and camping, despite high winds that often blow through the area. A pier on the west end of the beach is used by anglers, and scuba divers and surfers use a boat hoist on the pier to access the waters of the Santa Barbara Channel. Visitors can explore the rugged upland portions of the park from a trailhead in the parking area. Ambitious hikers can climb to Gaviota Peak that offers a spectacular view of the coast and the Channel Islands.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located on the site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row on the Pacific Ocean shoreline in Monterey. It holds 35,000 plants and animals representing 623 species. Among the aquarium's numerous exhibits, two are of particular note: The centerpiece of the Ocean's Edge Wing is a 33-foot (10m) high 300,000 gallon tank for viewing California coastal marine life. Sealife on exhibit includes stingrays, jellyfish, sea otters, an 11 lb. lobster over 50 years old, and numerous other native marine species, which can be viewed above and below the waterline. Only 15 minutes outside of Napa, you will think you are a world away as you cycle along the vine-covered hills of Carneros. With a cool afternoon breeze from the San Francisco Bay, this region is perfect for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Enjoy a bike ride along one of the quietest and most beautiful cycling spots in the Napa Valley – quiet, little traffic, and small family-owned wineries with top-notch wines. You will ride along rolling hills teeming with vineyards. On a clear day you may even be able to catch a glimpse of the San Francisco Bay. Your guide will talk about local history and will help you understand the process of growing grapes and making wine. Cycle along quiet country lanes to visit small, family-owned wineries in this area reminiscent of Burgundy. You will have the opportunity to taste some of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for which the Carneros region is famous, as well as some new and unusual varietals such as Syrah, Pinot Meunier, or Cabernet Franc. The route takes you along rolling hills through wide open spaces surrounded by lush green vineyards. Savour a Wine Country picnic lunch stop enroute at a great, scenic winery.
After lunch, visit one or two more wineries, keeping an eye out for birds of prey and other local wildlife. After the final winery stop, head back to Moore’s Landing at about 3:30pm. Here your guide will bid you a fond farewell after your active adventure of the day!
