My husband and I just returned from what was without a doubt the most wonderful vacation we have ever been on.

The State of Michigan is located in the Great Lakes Region of the United States of America. It is the eighth most populous state in the United States and has the longest freshwater shoreline of any political subdivision in the world, being bounded by four of the five Great Lakes, plus Lake Saint Clair. The state has 64,980 inland lakes and ponds! A person in the state is never more than six miles (10 km) from a natural water source or more than 87.2 miles (140.3 km) from a Great Lakes shoreline. It has more lighthouses than any other state. The heavily forested Upper Peninsula is relatively mountainous in the west. The Porcupine Mountains, which are part of one of the oldest mountain chains in the world, rise to an altitude of almost 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level and form the watershed between the streams flowing into Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Michigan is the leading auto-producing state in the U.S., although some of the industry has shifted to less-expensive labor in the Southern United States and overseas. With more than ten million residents, Michigan remains a large and influential state, ranking eighth in population among the fifty states.
