(Santiago, Easter Island)
Easter’s Island’s distinctive ancient rock statues – called Moai – rise from the earth to salute time immemorial as you stroll among their long shadows on the slopes of an extinct volcano.
Here at Rano Rara, 397 of the imposing statues stand or lay where they fell in timeless testament to the ancient civilization that created them. You are free to explore this maze of monolithic stone on your hike up the slope towards the stunning crater lake at the volcano’s peak, and take a moment to ponder this time-locked land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Elsewhere on the island, visit the ceremonial village of Orongo – birthplace of the birdman competition; view the ancient paintings that adorn the walls of Ana Kai Tangata cave; and dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean at beautiful Anakena beach. You’ll also experience mainland Santiago, where you’ll explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Valparaiso; relax in the pretty coastal town of Vina del Mar; and visit the home of Nobel laureate, Pablo Neruda.
