Experience and in depth visit to the pristine Amazon Rain Forest within the Yasunì National Park, an important UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the largest tract of tropical rain forest in Ecuador. Begin, by flying into Quito, the capital of Ecuador, and enjoy a night in the city. Then, head to the airport and fly to Coca, the gateway to the deep Amazon Rainforest! The principal Amazon artery for visitors is the Napo River, a major tributary of the main Amazon River. Its basin is 1400km long and one to three miles wide. Napo's 130 islands are covered by young forests, which provide refuge and nesting sites for a multitude of bird species. Along the length of the Napo, natives and settlers have established communities. Most of the shore is covered with tropical forest and over thousands of years, many lakes have formed. All meals and excursions are included.

Day 2: Quito - Coca - Amazon

Quito airport transfer with private vehicle, driver and English speaking guide.

Enjoy a direct flight from Quito to Coca. The flight duration is approximately 30 minutes.

Upon arrival to the airport in Coco, lodge staff will be waiting for you with a warm welcome. You'll be taken on a short group transfer to a nearby port where the real adventure begins.

At the port you will get on a motorized canoe downstream the Napo River, the major tributary of the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador. During the trip, you will have the chance to see different birds such as kingfishers, herons, and other wildlife, and admire the incredible views of the Amazon jungle that opens before your eyes. A boxed lunch will be provided on the trip. After your 2-hour ride along the Napo River, you will arrive at the Napo Wildlife Center’s dock entrance where after a quick break, you'll then switch to a paddle canoe (motorized canoes are not allowed within the Napo territory) to continue to the Lodge itself.

This majestic and peaceful dugout canoe ride on a narrow stream will lead you to the Añangu Lake, where the lodge is located. Late in the afternoon, you'll arrive to the Napo Wildlife Center where staff will welcome you with drinks and show your rooms and other areas of the lodge. Evening at leisure.

Day 3: Amazon

Early in the morning, you'll get to experience one of the most incredible spectacles of nature: the parrot clay licks. You'll get to the first clay lick within about an hour, and it will only take a few minutes from your arrival for the birds show up. It is a real spectacle of colors, about 11 species of bird such as parrots, macaws and parakeets visit the clay licks every day to feed with the minerals that are concentrated in the soil.

Later on, you'll hike along the forest trail as a group to visit the Kichwa Añangu community, to share time with the men, women and children of the community and learning about their every-day-life activities, routines and their ancestral customs and traditions. Afterward, you'll go back to the creek and go hiking for 30 minutes throughout a Terra Firme forest until reaching the second parrot clay lick and repeat the experience of seeing a great variety of parrots, parakeets and macaws as you eat a delicious lunch provided by staff. Late in the afternoon arrival back to the lodge for some time to relax.

Day 4: Amazon

Today you'll set out as a group to the Canopy Observation Tower, a high platform from which you will get a close up view of the most amazing views of the jungle. The tower is about 30 minutes from the lodge within the terra forme forest. This wooden platform of 36 meters high was built just next a huge and ancient Kapok tree. To get to the top you have to pass through different levels of the forest. Then, when you are finally there, the immensity and beauty of the Amazon jungle opens just before you. There are not enough words to describe it, you have to live it yourself!

Birds that are just virtually impossible to see from the jungle floor will pass right through you. Flocks of vibrantly colored tanagers, blue-and-yellow macaws and large toucans fly past in the early mornings and afternoons.

In the afternoon, after lunch back at the Napo Wildlife Center, you'll go deep into a terra firme trail to discover the beautiful and mysterious wildlife that hides in the forest interior. There are great possibilities to see lizards, different species of monkeys such as the endemic Golden Mantle Tamarin monkey, rare and unique insects and even some scary snakes! Also, you'll get to explore the black water Añangu Lake and streams that are home to different species of fish and mammals such as the Giant Otter, a unique specie from the Amazon.

  • Anne C. — June 30, 2016 — South America

The local guides were great, in Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lima. I really enjoyed having the same guide, driver and car for all activities in the Sacred Valley, Cusco. It really helped to make us feel comfortable. The accommodations were great, especially at Sol y Luna lodge. Everyone was very willing to help make the trip what we wanted and accommodate our needs. The timing of tours worked out really well and think the trip was planned according to our needs, including things we may not have even been aware of.

  • Bruce C. — June 15, 2016 — South America

Our trip to Machu Picchu was to celebrate our 15 year anniversary, it was amazing!!!! We are frequent travelers and don't normally use a travel company but did for this trip, it was fantastic. Everything was cared for, the tour guides were very knowledgeable and passionate about their culture. They truly took the effort out of this trip for us. We will definitely use Kensington again.

  • Mauricio G. — May 18, 2016 — South America

We were absolutely wowed and impressed by the level of detail in both the planning and accommodation of our needs. This trip was planned on a very short notice so we did not have high expectations. However, every moment of our trip from airport transfers, guides, sights to the culture of Peru were delivered leaving memories beyond our expectation. Thanks again to Nella and all guides in Peru.

  • William M. — May 18, 2016 — South America

Frederico was wonderful in BA, as well as Vicky for the half-day tour, and Vivienne in Iguazu was excellent. Appreciated the help with the itinerary from Matt's pre-trip.
