Day 2: Lima

Pick-up from your hotel for a half day city tour of Lima including the MATE Museum. Known as the city of the kings, Lima was founded in 1535 by Pizarro and rebuilt in 1991, the same year that UNESCO declared it a world heritage site. The Historic Centre of Lima is made up of the districts of Lima and Rímac.  Lima has developed a tourism industry, characterized by its historic center, archeological sites, nightlife, museums, art galleries, festivals, and traditions. Lima is home to restaurants and bars where local and international cuisine is served.

MATE is situated in the heart of the Barranco district of Lima. MATE aims to bring Peruvian artists and culture to worldwide attention, while offering the best of international contemporary art and photography to audiences in Lima. MATE facilitates this lively exchange through a dynamic programme of exhibitions, residencies, and events, alongside a permanent display of work by Mario Testino.

Enjoy dinner at the restaurant "Huaca Pucllana"

In the Fifth century, the Lima valley inhabitants started the construction of the Huaca Pucllana. Two important reasons inspired the group of sacred priests, who were the governing rulers at that time. The first reason was their need to express their religious authority. The second reason was directly linked with the control of the hydrological resources stemmed from the water canal system, on the left bank of the Rimac river. Therefore, Pucllana was an important ceremonial and administrative location. Its magnificence was reflected by the configuration of a monumental architecture. It was built with small adobe bricks wrought on a continuous base of blocks and remodeled during the three centuries of the Huaca existence. Currently the Pucllana Archeological Zone spreads over 15 hectares. Today, fifteen centuries after those men gave life to Pucllana, Huaca Pucllana Restaurant, offers you a sample of the best Peruvian and International cuisine. Welcome to the La Huaca Pucllana.

Day 10: Peruvian Amazon Cruise

Nature Expedition. Board the ship's comfortable excursion skiffs for your first adventure. Life jackets, ponchos, rubber boots, and plenty of cold potable water are always available for you on board the skiffs.

Within the vast Amazon flooded forest, cruise along an amazing black water stream, as your guides tell you about the rainforest. You will explore what scientists call a “gallery forest,” because of its narrow vegetation that creates a tunnel of leaves. As we float through this tunnel, your naturalist guides help you to spot parrots, macaws, and fluffy monk saki monkeys in the trees along the riverbanks.

Walk into the jungle to meet native Amazonia people. With your guides as your interpreters, ask about subsistence farming in Amazonia and they will tell you how to cultivate these wild plants and trees. Here, deep in the primary rainforest, your guides identify for you the fruit trees and medicinal plants that comprise Amazonia’s natural pharmacy.

As the sun sets, you will hear the loud, ferocious sounding warning signals made by the howler monkeys as they mark their territories. When night falls, you will hear the second movement of the Amazon rainforest symphony, as other nocturnal animals send their shrill calls across the tree tops. We will use our special spotlight torches to locate night creatures, including, perhaps, huge caimans.

Day 13: Iquitos - Lima

The excursions today depend on the level of the river. Weather and time permitting, this will be the last opportunity to see how people live along the Amazon by visiting the lively riverside community of Belen by skiff, in Iquitos. Here, where the houses and shops actually float on the river during some months, you will see the bustling food market of the entire Peruvian Amazon where all local inhabitants throughout the region sell and purchase goods.

You have time to pack and prepare for the next stage of your journey.

Please leave your packed luggage in your cabins, to be transferred to the bus, before coming to the dining room for lunch.

Your afternoon in the remote city of Iquitos, accessible only by river or air, will not disappoint. This bustling town, complete with a house built by Gustave Eiffel, was once a rich center of the rubber industry. En route to the airport, you will have a group visit of the Manatee Rescue Center, where biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees that conservation authorities have seized from local people and fishermen. Biologists will give a presentation about the project and its efforts to help these helpless mammals. You will also see how the manatees are cared for and are prepared for re-introduction into their natural habitat. This unique hotel museum is an architectural treasure built on Inca foundations. Guest Rooms are wonderfully unique, reflecting the monastery’s charm and elegance. Rich wood furnishings, antique artwork and architectural quirks add to the historic atmosphere.

Everyone we dealt with was AMAZING - knowledgeable, helpful, willing to go the extra mile. I actually already have recommended Kensington Tours to my friends and family.

We did not worry about a thing during our trip. All the people associated with Kensington Tours were awesome. Very detail focused with times and meeting places. Awesome group

Our vacation was "perfection from start to end". What a great feeling it was to know someone was at each airport/train waiting for us, driving us to the hotels, checked us into our hotels and didn't just drop us off, discussed each days itinerary and pick up times - called us in our room to verify times. When they say they will be there at 9:20, rest assured they will be there exactly at that time. The drivers, tour guides and representatives Bruno, Mel, Thomas, Betty, Paul, Willy & Hilda spoke excellent English, knew their history of Peru extremely well. We asked all kinds of questions and they were able to answer every question as well as taught us how to say thank you in Quechua and Aymara. The hotels were outstanding and exceptional! If I over looked anyone or any other detail - you all were outstanding including Kelly and Maria who put this trip together bending over backwards to make every detail perfect. You have made the perfect vacation even more perfect!!! I will add my review to TripAdvisor. Thank you so so much.

We had an excellent vacation. We loved Peru. The logistics and quality of guides were very good. In particular, the tour guides at Machu Picchu, the Amazon and Lima historical old town were excellent.

  • Anne C. — June 30, 2016 — South America

The local guides were great, in Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lima. I really enjoyed having the same guide, driver and car for all activities in the Sacred Valley, Cusco. It really helped to make us feel comfortable. The accommodations were great, especially at Sol y Luna lodge. Everyone was very willing to help make the trip what we wanted and accommodate our needs. The timing of tours worked out really well and think the trip was planned according to our needs, including things we may not have even been aware of.

Our trip to Machu Picchu was to celebrate our 15 year anniversary, it was amazing!!!! We are frequent travelers and don't normally use a travel company but did for this trip, it was fantastic. Everything was cared for, the tour guides were very knowledgeable and passionate about their culture. They truly took the effort out of this trip for us. We will definitely use Kensington again.

  • Charles B. — May 25, 2016 — South America

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Peru. The Kensington representatives took all of the stress out of the logistics and were very welcoming and knowledgeable.

  • Gerri G. — May 18, 2016 — South America

Excellent service from our Kensington staff contact, and terrific guides and hotels. All transfers at airports were seamless.

  • Mauricio G. — May 18, 2016 — South America

We were absolutely wowed and impressed by the level of detail in both the planning and accommodation of our needs. This trip was planned on a very short notice so we did not have high expectations. However, every moment of our trip from airport transfers, guides, sights to the culture of Peru were delivered leaving memories beyond our expectation. Thanks again to Nella and all guides in Peru.

  • William M. — May 18, 2016 — South America

All the guides were extremely helpful and courteous.
