Day 2: Lima

Delve into pre-Columbian history by visiting two fascinating museums. Founded in 1926, the Larco Herrera Museum has the largest private collection of pre-Columbian art, including incredibly fine textiles, jewellery, and stonework from several ancient cultures. Continue to the Archaeological Museum, a must-see for history buffs. It provides an overview of the history of the region. Highlights include exceptionally well preserved mummies as well as spectacular textiles.

Enjoy a set menu dinner at the restaurant "Huaca Pucllana."

In the Fifth century, the Lima valley inhabitants started the construction of the Huaca Pucllana. Two important reasons inspired the group of sacred priests, who were the governing rulers at that time. The first reason was their need to express their religious authority. The second reason was directly linked with the control of the hydrological resources stemmed from the water canal system, on the left bank of the Rimac river. Therefore, Pucllana was an important ceremonial and administrative location. Its magnificence was reflected by the configuration of a monumental architecture. It was built with small adobe bricks wrought on a continuous base of blocks and remodeled during the three centuries of the Huaca existence. Currently the Pucllana Archeological Zone spreads over 15 hectares. Today, fifteen centuries after those men gave life to Pucllana, Huaca Pucllana Restaurant, offers you a sample of the best Peruvian and International cuisine. Welcome to La Huaca Pucllana!

Day 3: Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley

Meet your English-speaking local representative and driver for a private airport transfer.

Fly from Lima to Cusco. Flight duration is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Separate purchase.

Depart for the Sacred Valley and en-route, enjoy a visit to Awana Kancha. The textile mill at Awana Kancha is an entertaining and culturally-rich stop on the journey between Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Set 30 minutes outside of the Cusco city center, this popular artisan outpost is a friendly place to experience alpacas and Andean culture. Visitors to Awana Kancha can marvel at traditionally-dressed women and the colorful textiles they spin before your eyes. Using the wool of alpacas, llamas, guanacos, and vicunyas, the women create patterns using natural dyes that have existed in the Andes since the time of the Inca. What’s more, in addition to the textiles, visitors have the chance to hand-feed llamas or nurse baby alpacas with milk from a bottle.

Take the rest of the day to acclimatize and enjoy time at leisure surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sacred Valley.

Accommodation: Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa

Nestled in the Sacred Valley, located 2 hours from the city of Cusco, Tambo del Inka is the best hotel in Peru from which travelers can reach Machu Picchu, the mystical Inca citadel. Day 4: Sacred Valley

Visit the Chinchero Market where the local people wearing bright dresses get together to barter their products: good as well as handicrafts. Located 32 Km (18 miles) from Cusco and surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the town of Chinchero appears in the middle of the puna. Around the main square, the remains of an Inca wall and the frescoes on the portico of the Colonial church can be observed. Next, you will visit Ollantaytambo, it is here in this beautiful strategic spot,  that the Inca Pachacutec built his fortress/sanctuary of Ollantaytambo. It is a beautiful setting and the hills that surround it hide some of the most impressive ruins in the Valley. It contains structures such as the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Hall, the Incahuatana and the Baños de la Princesa (Princess Baths). This site is one of the few places where the Spaniards lost a battle during the conquest. Lunch is included at Wayra Restaurant.

Includes tourist ticket and entrance fees.

The Inca Citadel lies between Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu (“Young Peak” and “Old Peak”). The Inca Pachacutec built the Citadel using sharp stone blocks, fitted together perfectly. Houses, temples, a public square are all connected by narrow roads and steps cut into the mountainside. There are many theories as to the purpose of Machu Picchu; a temple to the sun? A fortress against jungle inhabitants? A sanctuary for the Incas? The mysterious lost city awaits you!

After the tour, enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge Hotel and the rest of the afternoon is to be spent at leisure!

Everyone we dealt with was AMAZING - knowledgeable, helpful, willing to go the extra mile. I actually already have recommended Kensington Tours to my friends and family.

We did not worry about a thing during our trip. All the people associated with Kensington Tours were awesome. Very detail focused with times and meeting places. Awesome group

Our vacation was "perfection from start to end". What a great feeling it was to know someone was at each airport/train waiting for us, driving us to the hotels, checked us into our hotels and didn't just drop us off, discussed each days itinerary and pick up times - called us in our room to verify times. When they say they will be there at 9:20, rest assured they will be there exactly at that time. The drivers, tour guides and representatives Bruno, Mel, Thomas, Betty, Paul, Willy & Hilda spoke excellent English, knew their history of Peru extremely well. We asked all kinds of questions and they were able to answer every question as well as taught us how to say thank you in Quechua and Aymara. The hotels were outstanding and exceptional! If I over looked anyone or any other detail - you all were outstanding including Kelly and Maria who put this trip together bending over backwards to make every detail perfect. You have made the perfect vacation even more perfect!!! I will add my review to TripAdvisor. Thank you so so much.

We had an excellent vacation. We loved Peru. The logistics and quality of guides were very good. In particular, the tour guides at Machu Picchu, the Amazon and Lima historical old town were excellent.

The local guides were great, in Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lima. I really enjoyed having the same guide, driver and car for all activities in the Sacred Valley, Cusco. It really helped to make us feel comfortable. The accommodations were great, especially at Sol y Luna lodge. Everyone was very willing to help make the trip what we wanted and accommodate our needs. The timing of tours worked out really well and think the trip was planned according to our needs, including things we may not have even been aware of.

Our trip to Machu Picchu was to celebrate our 15 year anniversary, it was amazing!!!! We are frequent travelers and don't normally use a travel company but did for this trip, it was fantastic. Everything was cared for, the tour guides were very knowledgeable and passionate about their culture. They truly took the effort out of this trip for us. We will definitely use Kensington again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Peru. The Kensington representatives took all of the stress out of the logistics and were very welcoming and knowledgeable.

  • Gerri G. — May 18, 2016 — South America

Excellent service from our Kensington staff contact, and terrific guides and hotels. All transfers at airports were seamless.

  • Mauricio G. — May 18, 2016 — South America

We were absolutely wowed and impressed by the level of detail in both the planning and accommodation of our needs. This trip was planned on a very short notice so we did not have high expectations. However, every moment of our trip from airport transfers, guides, sights to the culture of Peru were delivered leaving memories beyond our expectation. Thanks again to Nella and all guides in Peru.

  • William M. — May 18, 2016 — South America

All the guides were extremely helpful and courteous.
