Upon arrival at the train station, board the Vistadome train for a 2 hour journey to the ancient ruins at Machu Picchu. En route to Machu Picchu the train travels along the Urubamba River with awe-inspiring views of the dramatic canyon.

The rest of your luggage will be stored safely at your hotel and returned to you either in Cuzco or The Sacred Valley. Hand luggage on the train is limited to 11 pounds or 5 kgs.

The Inca Citadel lies between Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu (“Young Peak” and “Old Peak”). The Inca Pachacutec built the Citadel using sharp stone blocks, fitted together perfectly. Houses, temples, a public square are all connected by narrow roads and steps cut into the mountainside. There are many theories as to the purpose of Machu Picchu; a temple to the sun? A fortress against jungle inhabitants? A sanctuary for the Incas? The mysterious lost city awaits you!

After the tour, enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge Hotel and the rest of the afternoon is to be spent at leisure!

For your convenience the bus ticket between Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes is provided. Buses depart about every 30 minutes, once the bus is full.

The eternal guardian of the Sanctuary, Wayna Picchu (meaning “Young Mountain’ in Quechua) towers over the Incan city, and an amazing view can be appreciated from the top. The route to the top of the mountain is treacherous, with very narrow pathways, and to conquer the summit is truly a rewarding experience! Along the route and at the top of the mountain are sacred structures and eye-catching terraces, built right against the slope’s edge. Depending on each person's hiking pace, this activity may take up to 3 hours. This activity is on your own; please speak to your sales agent about organizing a guide to accompany you.

Here, your vehicle will be waiting for you to take you back to your hotel after a day of exploring Santiago and being a true “Santiaguino”.

  • Gerri G. — May 18, 2016 — South America

Excellent service from our Kensington staff contact, and terrific guides and hotels. All transfers at airports were seamless.

  • Mauricio G. — May 18, 2016 — South America

We were absolutely wowed and impressed by the level of detail in both the planning and accommodation of our needs. This trip was planned on a very short notice so we did not have high expectations. However, every moment of our trip from airport transfers, guides, sights to the culture of Peru were delivered leaving memories beyond our expectation. Thanks again to Nella and all guides in Peru.

  • William M. — May 18, 2016 — South America

All the guides were extremely helpful and courteous.

  • Lisa H. — May 12, 2016 — South America

We have been on numerous trips with Kensington and have always been more than pleased with ALL aspects: friendly, patient and knowledgeable staff, various personalized itineraries, ease of reaching agent with questions, accommodations, tour guides, transportation, flexibility, activities offered, guidance/suggestions, concern/contacting us when we're traveling, welcome gift at our hotel and more. We know we're in excellent hands from beginning to end with Kensington -- a top of the line agency with personalized, custom trips of a lifetime- at an affordable price. Thanks Kensington!

  • Dan W. — May 12, 2016 — South America

  • Rosanne R. — May 12, 2016 — South America

I was very impressed with the timeliness, courteousness and knowledge of our drivers and guides. It was luxurious and comforting to be in their hands! Frederico was wonderful in BA, as well as Vicky for the half-day tour, and Vivienne in Iguazu was excellent. Appreciated the help with the itinerary from Matt's pre-trip. Also loved the flexibility of choosing our own dates and length of time in each place. Top notch agency!

  • Minaxi P. — May 12, 2016 — South America

I was very impressed with Kensington. Our tour guides were wonderful and very well educated. we especially liked our guide in Scared Valley and Cusco. We will be using Kensington again. Thank you!

  • Bonita T. — May 13, 2016 — South America

Erika was great. Darwig was great. Alberto was great. Caesar was great. Service at hotels was stellar. Had a wonderful time.

  • Gerald R. — May 18, 2016 — South America

I would highly recommend the Explora Lodge as the truly only best way to experience the park on the the Chilean side. The hotel's setting inside the park is spectacular and the overall experience staying at the lodge is excellent - top quality dining, service, and guided activities. The El Splendor hotel in El Calafate Argentina is perfectly adequate, and being within walking distance of restaurants and shops in town is a plus. I highly recommend the gourmet cruise I took on Lake Argentina to see two of the glaciers up close as well as numerous blue icebergs. The food and service were excellent. Also the hotels in Buenos Aires and Santiago were very good and in good locations.

  • Robert W. — May 18, 2016 — South America

Claudia did a fantastic job of organizing our tour with less tan 30 days notice for the trip. Everything she set up went like clockwork. All of the guides and drivers we had were first rate. This is our second tour using Kensington and we will be back.
