Whether it's the exuberant culture of Brazil or the stunning archeological sites at Machu Picchu in Peru, there's something for everyone. Despite the widespread appeal of a tour of South America, there are some countries that can sometimes be unfairly overlooked, and that includes Colombia. The continent's fourth largest country offers the perfect blend of natural beauty and bustling city life, so it's no wonder CNN named it one of the best destinations for 2013. There are several sites in particular you need to visit if you find yourself in this South American gem.
Located in the heart of the capital city of Bogota, Bolivar Square is among the most historic places in the country. The impressive history will be evident from the second you set foot in the square, as colonial-style buildings are sitting around seemingly every corner. Among the most striking buildings is the The Archbishopric Cathedral of Bogota, which is one of the biggest churches in South America. It was completed in 1823 and aside from being a stunning piece of architecture, the church also contains a large number of historical pieces of artwork.
This city of about 2.7 million inhabitants is a thriving hub of activity, but there's much more to Medellin than that. Specifically, thanks to its location at the northernmost reaches of the Andes, it offers visitors the chance to take in some of the most stunning views in South America. There are a variety of ways to enjoy the city, but one of the most unique is through cable car. Medellin installed a cable car system several years ago, and now it provides an unusual way to get from point A to point B. Plus, since it rises as high as 1,309 feet above the ground, traveling by cable car offers a breathtaking perspective of the city below.
