Whether you're embarking on a tour of Italy or a trip through Australia, you're sure to run into some memorable landmarks. While nearly every country boasts a number of impressive destinations, there are some in particular that stand above the rest, and TripAdvisor recently released its list of the best landmarks in the world. The list was compiled after careful analysis of millions of reviews from travelers and includes a wide variety of sites that will appeal to a wide variety of travelers. Here's a look at some of the highlights:
Ancient City Wall, Croatia
Located in the coastal city of Dubrovnik, these walls date back to around the 13th century, and their impressive history helped them land at No. 9 on TripAdvisor's list. While the walls serve as a reminder of the country's past, they're more than just an impressive Medieval fortification. A walk around the walls, which stand up to 80 feet tall in some places, has become a staple of Croatia tours, and with good reason. While you're admiring the impressive stature of these fortifications, you'll also be treated to stunning views of the Adriatic Sea.
Great Mosque of Córdoba, Spain
A tour of Spain will bring you to some of the most stunning works of architecture in the world, but few can compete with the Great Mosque of Córdoba, which came in at No. 6 spot on TripAdvisor's list. Reviewers certainly made the right choice, as this enormous place of worship, which dates back to 987 A.D., is often regarded as one of the best examples of Renaissance and Moorish architecture in the world.
Machu Picchu, Peru
Long a staple of South America tours, the archeological site of Machu Picchu came in at No. 1 of the world's top landmarks. Located in the Andes, Machu Picchu is such an appealing tourist destination for a number of reasons. In addition to its compelling history - it was built in the 1400s during the Inca Empire - it's location in the heart of the South American wilderness is hard to beat. And for the more adventure-travel inclined, the Inca Trail, that path that leads up to Machu Picchu, is regarded as one of the best hikes in the world.
