We board our boat, and navigate towards the Castillos de Guayana, two old forts located on a hilly bank of the Orinoco, overlooking the river. They were built to protect Santo Tomás, the first Spanish settlement founded on the riverbank. The older fort, the Castillo de San Francisco, dates from the 1670s. As pirate raids continued unabated, a second fort, the Castillo de San Diego de Alcalá, was built in 1747 on a nearby higher hill. At the end of 19th century, the forts were used to control river traffic. We continue to the "Meeting of the Waters", where the blackwater river Caroní meets the whitewater Orinoco River. We can admire the beautiful La Llovizna and Cachamay Falls, before returning to the dock. Duration: 5 hours.
