Day 3: Gran Sabana - Puerto Ordaz
IMPORTANT DETAILS REGARDING THIS EXCURSION:
Included: professional guide (billingual Spanish/English), tents, sleeping bags, ground mats, 3 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 3 dinners, food and cooking gear, transportable toilet (no showers), first aid kit, emergency communication.
Suggested Packing List: good, comfortable hiking shoes and sandals, thick socks (2-3 pairs for river crossing), sun hat, sunscreen, refillable bottle for water, insect repellent, swim wear, towel, shorts/pants (light, quick dry) for hiking, raincoat/water durable jacket, flashlight, snacks for energy, any other items you would consider important.
Departure from Puerto Ordaz. Before heading south, we make a stop at the beautiful tropical Cachamay Park, located on the banks of the Caroní River. We then head towards the Gran Sabana, through the rubber-seeking and gold mining towns of El Callao and Tumeremo. After lunch we continue towards El Dorado with its famous prison camps, wind our way up the "Escalera", and in the late afternoon reach the northern boundary of the mystic Gran Sabana. Overnight at a basic but comfortable camp (beds). Dinner at the camp.

For the first and second night we will stay in basic campsites - these tented camps will have beds to sleep in. On the third night we will stay in a basic lodge in Santa Elena. Jeep Safari Gran Sabana
Day 4: Gran Sabana
After breakfast we explore the Gran Sabana! We drive to the Pemon Indian village of Liworibo, and from there take a 30-minute dugout-canoe ride to beautiful Chinak Meru, the highest waterfall in the Gran Sabana. We will stop at the water holes of Pozo Escondido and Pozo de Los Enamorados, where we'll enjoy our picnic lunch and have time for a refreshing bath. In the afternoon return to our camp. Dinner at the camp.

Day 5: Gran Sabana
After breakfast we head south to the Brazilian border. We will pass by clear rivers and waterfalls, driving through rolling savannah and forest, always accompanied by the impressive scenery of the Tepuys (table top mountains). We will stop at the waterfalls of Kawi and Kama Meru, the lookout point El Oso, and Arapan and Soroape falls, where we will stop for a picnic lunch. We continue south, stopping at Jaspe falls, a shallow stream flowing over a wide bed of pure, semi-precious jasper, in sheets of glowing yellows, oranges and reds. In the afternoon we arrive at the border town of Santa Elena de Uairén. Overnight in simple but comfortable lodge. Dinner at the lodge.

After breakfast we will drive across the border to the town of Paracaima for some shopping (optional; yellow fever certificate needed). We then head back to Puerto Ordaz.
In the afternoon, enjoy some time on your own to relax.

We board our boat, and navigate towards the Castillos de Guayana, two old forts located on a hilly bank of the Orinoco, overlooking the river. They were built to protect Santo Tomás, the first Spanish settlement founded on the riverbank. The older fort, the Castillo de San Francisco, dates from the 1670s. As pirate raids continued unabated, a second fort, the Castillo de San Diego de Alcalá, was built in 1747 on a nearby higher hill. At the end of 19th century, the forts were used to control river traffic. We continue to the "Meeting of the Waters", where the blackwater river Caroní meets the whitewater Orinoco River. We can admire the beautiful La Llovizna and Cachamay Falls, before returning to the dock. Duration: 5 hours.

VISA/PASSPORT
A valid passport and a visa or tourist card are required for both US and Canadian citizens. Tourist cards are issued on flights from the U.S. to Venezuela for persons staying less than ninety days. Persons traveling for reasons other than tourism, however, should consult the Venezuelan Embassy or nearest Venezuelan consulate regarding possible visa requirements for their specific purpose of travel. Venezuelan immigration authorities may require that U.S. passports have at least six months validity remaining from the date of arrival in Venezuela. Some U.S. citizens have been turned back to the United States because their passports were to expire in less than six months.
Please note obtaining a visa is your responsibility. These requirements change often and therefore it is best that you check with the Embassy of Venezuela for the most up to date visa information.

Health insurance is required. Medical facilities are poor quality and not widespread. We recommend that you see a health-care provider who specializes in Travel Medicine. The doctor or health-care provider will determine what vaccinations and medication you will need, depending on factors such as your health and immunization history, areas of the country you will be visiting, and planned activities. - Your deposit is due immediately on booking (30% of program price, minimum $350). The balance is due 90 days prior to departure.
- Cancellations of confirmed bookings 90 days or more prior to departure will receive full refund minus a $350 (per person) administrative fee and any non-refundable paid fees (e.g. non-refundable airfare, cruise or hotel deposits). 60-89 days will be subject to loss of 30% of program price. 30-59 days will be subject to loss of 50% of program price. 29 days or less will be subject to loss of 100% of program price.
- Tour quotes do not include airfare to/from the trip start point unless noted on the itinerary
- Cost increases in currency exchange, government fees, taxes, surcharges or hotel/lodge tariff increases between quote date and start date are payable by the client.
