Witness the growth of a rising star in Djibouti

With hopes to become the Dubai of East Africa, the city of Djibouti is a luxurious location to add flavor and glamour to your East African safari.

Historically nomadic people, current citizens of Djibouti have mainly settled into permanent residencies, yet their cultural traditions remain. Dance is a very important pastime here, with many performed and choreographed specifically for an occasion, such as a marriage or birth. Visitors are also happy to catch some local literature and poetry, often performed orally in Djibouti.

Craftsmanship is a point of pride for Djiboutians, and is apparent in the city’s many handicrafts. The Marche Central, or Central Market, is a hub for great souvenirs. Afar and Somali knives are things of beauty, as are fiddima, the traditional woven mats of the area.

Issa, Afar, Arabic and French flavors collide in this city’s cuisine, with stuffed lamb being a local favorite. Because it is located on the Horn of Africa, travelers can also expected fresh, expertly prepared seafood dishes in the city’s many high-end restaurants.
