Teatime at Yu Yuan's two-story teahouse is an experience fit for a queen. 16th-century China at Yu Yuan

China tours are not complete without a visit to a traditional Chinese garden. This storied pasttime can best be appreciated in the 16th-century classic garden Yu Yuan.

Located amid the bustling city of Shanghai, the white washed walls and lotus-filled waterways of Yu Yuan provide the perfect place to recuperate while traveling. Guests will surely marvel at the craftsmanship of this nearly 500-year-old garden, whose tiled dragon sculptures and unique rock formations continue to wow guests with their intricate workmanship.

For a relaxing stop at Yu Yuan, travelers can walk across the zig-zagged bridge in the middle of the garden’s ornamental lake to Huxin Ting, a tremendous two-story teahouse. Visited by the Queen of England herself, Huxin Ting’s tea is worth every cent for a cup. Offering dramatic flavor and intoxicating aromas, a mid-afternoon visit to this teahouse is not easily forgotten.

Guests in China during Chinese New Year will want to save the 15th night of the celebration for a visit to Yu Yuan. Often called the Lantern Festival, this night sees the entire garden romantically lit with 10,000 traditional lanterns.
