Admire ancient artifacts and modern silks at Ban Chiang

In 1966, a Harvard University anthropology student, Stephen Young, was doing work in Ban Chiang, Thailand, when he tripped over a tree root and came face-to-face with some half-buried pottery pieces. More than four decades later, travelers on Thailand tours gather near that same spot, which has become the most important archaeological dig in Southeast Asia.

As researchers dug up more pottery shards, as well as bones, tools, weapons, ornaments and other artifacts, they discovered the remains of a complex ancient civilization.

The settlement at Ban Chiang might date from as early as 2000 B.C., and visitors can see how the society developed over thousands of years. Primitive tools evolved into impressive spears, sickles, fish hooks and jewelry on display at the Ban Chiang National Museum. The museum not only explains the fascinating history of an ancient civilization, it shares the remarkable story of how Ban Chiang was discovered and excavated.

Travelers can also visit the museum to purchase modern-day handicrafts and other goods created by local villagers, including distinctive hand-woven silk and cotton garments.

The nearby city of Khon Kaen is a convenient base for an excursion to Ban Chiang, and available accommodations include luxurious boutique villas.
