Hikers are likely to spot koalas along the tracks in the Glass House Mountains. See fascinating koala bears at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane

Travelers who visit the city of Brisbane on a tour of Australia will have one of the few opportunities to see koala bears up close, {del comma} at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. This remarkable facility began in 1927 with two koalas, and now serves as home to more than 130 of them.

This sanctuary is one of the few places where visitors can hold a koala bear for a short period of time. These animals are carefully protected throughout Australia, due to nearly being hunted to extinction in the past, and in the Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria humans are forbidden to touch or hold koalas.

The bears may be held by humans in Queensland, the state containing Brisbane, but only at special facilities such as Lone Pine and under extremely specific conditions. Each koala at Lone Pine can only be held for a total of 30 minutes each day, regardless of how many visitors want to do so.

Visitors to the sanctuary can see other famed Australian animals as well, including kangaroos, wallabies, platypuses and Tasmanian devils.

The New South Wales Department of Environment and Climate Change classifies koalas as a vulnerable species requiring careful conservation. Conversely, Victoria's Department of Sustainability and Environment characterizes their koala population as large and thriving.
