Urban life meets wildlife in Sydney Harbour National Park
Travelers on Australia tours who are enjoying the cosmopolitan adventures of Sydney will find they don't have to venture far to appreciate the country's natural splendor, as Sydney Harbour National Park offers a beautiful playground of beaches, islands and bushland.
According to Frommer's, many visitors to the national park are surprised to find such extensive bushland so close to the well-developed real estate of Sydney. Dry eucalyptus forest and heathlands are among the park's landscapes, and visitors can spot brushtail opossums, flying foxes, long-nosed bandicoots, water rats and more than 150 bird species in the park. The area around Manly is a favorite destination for wildlife enthusiasts, as it is home to a colony of little penguins.
From Manly, visitors might trek along the 6-mile trail to Spit Bridge. The trail affords spectacular harbor views and winds past Aboriginal stone carvings.
History buffs might head for Fort Denison, a restored island garrison in the middle of the harbor. The fort was once used as a penal colony, as well, and those interested in this side of Sydney's history can also visit the prisoner processing facilities at the Manly Quarantine Station.
For sporting types, the park boasts many sheltered beaches where the water is perfect for swimming, and the area around North Head is great for scuba diving.
