Exotic species populate Costa Rica's coast-to-coast conservation area
Costa Rica translates to "rich coast," and for nature lovers on Costa Rica tours, the beaches of the Guanacaste Conservation Area are rich indeed, being the nesting site for more than 250,000 turtles each year.
Two threatened species, the olive ridley turtle and leatherback sea turtle, return to the Guanacaste Pacific Coast each year to mate and lay their eggs, as do green and hawksbill turtles. However, the conservation zone stretches all the way across the country, from the Pacific beaches used by the turtles, across a volcanic central region, to the Atlantic coast. It incorporates deciduous and evergreen forests that rise to heights of more than 6,500 feet, as well as savannahs, mangroves and calabash forest.
Not surprisingly, these varied environments support diverse wildlife. Visitors to Guanacaste can spot various monkey species, including white-face, howler and spider, as well as unusual creatures like the collared anteater, jaguarundi, white-lipped peccary and Central American tapir. The crested guan, military macaw, ibis and jabiru are among the native bird species, which number more than 500.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association website describes the olive ridley turtle's "extraordinary" nesting method, as hundreds of thousands of females come ashore simultaneously to lay their eggs. Scientists are unsure what triggers these mass nestings.
