Frolic beside a mountain lake while touring Ecuador
While flying in to the capital city of Quito, travelers on Ecuador tours are likely to see the snow-capped peak of Cotopaxi, one of the tallest volcanoes in the world. Those inspired to visit the majestic mountain will find plenty of trails leading through breathtaking scenery in Cotopaxi National Park.
The park covers more than 82,500 acres and is an easy day trip from Quito. Visitors might begin an adventure at the park's small museum before hiking to Laguna de Limpiopungo, a pristine lake that reflects the nearby hillsides. Intrepid explorers can head to other spectacular lakes in the park, such as Santo Domingo, which is surrounded by the ruins of Incan forts and other ancient structures. Mountain biking is also a popular means of transport around Cotopaxi, which is home to deer, wild horses, pumas, Andean condors, spectacled bears and other unique creatures.
More serious hikers might stay in the park overnight or embark on an even longer adventure, camping out under the stars. Those looking for more amenities might stay in one of the haciendas built on the mountain's flanks, which provide hot meals, warm beds and might include fishing supplies, bikes or even horses to ride.
Serious mountaineers can scale the icy heights to reach the volcano's summit, where they can snap unbelievable pictures of the Andean countryside and Quito.
