Natural splendor and plenty of adventure in Manuel Antonio Park
Travelers on Costa Rica tours can head to the country's Pacific coast to discover why Forbes magazine recently named Manuel Antonio one of the world's 12 most beautiful national parks.
First put on a map in 1519 by Ponce de Leon, famous seeker of the fountain of youth, Manuel Antonio has changed little in the centuries since. It remains a pristine wilderness of white sand beaches and tropical forests populated by a multitude of exotic creatures.
Visitors can take a canopy tour to see some of the park's 184 colorful bird species, or plunge into the crystal blue Pacific waters to snorkel or scuba dive among schools of tropical fish. Sloths, iguanas and squirrel monkeys are just a few of the animals to be spotted on a Manuel Antonio jungle safari.
The Savegre and Naranjo rivers flow right through the rainforest, and adventurous souls who brave the class 2 and 4 rapids will find themselves amidst jungle waterfalls and lagoons perfect for swimming.
Rainmaker Mountain, a private preserve open to visitors, is home to more than half the country's plant and animal species, including the Harlequin toad, thought to be extinct in Costa Rica until it was discovered on Rainmaker in 2003.
Travelers looking for a civilized pursuit after emerging from the jungle can tee up at a Ted Robinson-designed golf course.
