CENTRAL AMERICAN TOURS

See the rainforest from a new perspective in Costa Rica See the tropical rain forest at Parque Nacional Corcovado in Costa Rica

Those embarking on Costa Rica tours who are interested in seeing a colossal portion of the nation's original tropical rain forest can do so at Parque Nacional Corcovado. Located in the southwestern portion of the Osa Peninsula, this park contains several animal species that can be seen in few - if any - other places in the world.

The area that would become the Corcovado park remained unknown and undisturbed by the Costa Rican population until the 1960s, when loggers found the area. For 15 years, the logging industry devastated this rain forest, only stopping in 1975 when it came under the protection of the federal government.

Corcovado is approximately 42,500 hectares in area, and its biodiversity is nothing short of remarkable. Intriguing animals such as the giant anteater, Baird's tapir, a large population of scarlet macaws and the rarely seen harpy eagle (known as the world's largest bird of prey) are all within the park's borders.

The extremely endangered Central American jaguar is also present. This animal is often targeted by poachers.

According to the Smithsonian Institute, a total of 124 mammal species, 375 bird species, 117 reptile and amphibian species and 136 species of freshwater fish and crustaceans can be found in the park.
