Tutankhamun’s legacy in Saqqara
King Tut may be old news by now, but a stop in Saqqara to see some of his era’s finest relics is still a highlight of Egypt tours.
A huge necropolis of pyramids, temples and tombs of the pharaohs and sacred animals, the vast burial grounds at Saqqara feature interesting artifacts both large and small. The sky-scraping Pyramid of Djoser is the world’s oldest stone monument, and today looks similar to a beehive due to erosion of its ancient rocks. Travelers in the area should keep their eyes out for small relics such as statue feet, often still remaining despite the rest of the statue's body being long gone.
Another attraction in the area is the tomb of Maya, King Tutankhamun’s wet nurse. The fact that such a large, ornamented tomb was given to a person not even in direct lineage with the king is the cause of speculation among historians and is still under investigation, and provides some background on ancient Egypt’s social hierarchy. Travelers who would like to add depth to their visit should head to the fabulous Imhotep Museum. Seven spacious rooms are filled with ornamented relics, including exquisite blue and turquoise tiles that once decorated the Djoser’s Pyramid, as well as Imhotep’s feet, found atop a prolific base.
