Walk the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem
Israel is a holy land for many of the Western World's most important religions, and travelers on a tour of Israel can relive one of the globe's most compelling religious stories on a walk down the Via Dolorosa.
The Via Dolorosa, the name of which means "way of sorrows" in Latin, is alleged to be the path that Jesus walked on right before his crucifixion. Although the road may not necessarily be the actual trail walked by Jesus - in fact, the path's route has changed over the centuries - it is still considered to be an important place for pilgrims to reflect on Christian scripture.
Travelers who follow the Via Dolorosa will see the 14 Stations of the Cross, which represent important events that occurred before Jesus was crucified. From the first station representing the spot where he was condemned to death to the final station, which is claimed to be the site where he was resurrected, tourists can trace his story from beginning to end.
The best way to experience the Via Dolorosa is on a private tour. These excursions allow travelers to better appreciate the reflective nature of the path, as they forgo the cattle-call atmosphere of larger tours.
