Innovative art in Bikaner
An oasis town amid sand dunes, travelers on India tours may find the artistic expressions of Bikaner to be among the most interesting in the world.
Bikaner’s most famous site is the historic Junagarh Fort. While originally built for protection during battles, the fort is a better example of the exterior and interior designs of the region. Decorated in vivid red and gold designs, the walls of Lal Niwas are often a favorite of visitors, and are the oldest walls of the fort. Coronation Hall, adorned with plaster-cast compositions, mirrors and glass, is one of the region’s best examples of Indian prosperity.
Featuring an intimate collection of fine pottery, weapons and areas fossils, the Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum also has a great display of miniature paintings. Guests who choose to examine these mini masterpieces, which are renowned for their quality, will be glad they took the time to do so.
While travelers can find a fine array of carpets and local artisan goods throughout Bikaner, it is known for its Usta, camel leather painted in vibrant color combinations. With the material molded into a number of goods, visitors can return home with extremely unique purses, cushions and even shoes.
