Sacred Hindu experiences in Pushkar
Found amid a narrow, arid valley, the sacred city of Pushkar has been a spiritual destination on India tours for centuries. Travelers wanting to experience the holiest of this country will enjoy a stop in this historically rich town.
Holiness centers around Pushkar Lake, which is believed to be the spot that Hindu god Brahma threw a lotus flower. Surrounding the lake are 52 sets of ghats, or stairs, that lead into the water for pilgrims to bathe in. With hundreds of guests often arriving each day, the procession is quite an event for travelers to watch, and can be a spiritual experience even for bystanders.
At the far end of the lake, the vibrant Brahma Temple is hard to miss and worth a look inside. Featuring an interior embossed with intricate gold designs, shrines and colorful Indian tapestries, the deep religious importance of this spot becomes widely apparent.
Very different from the black-and-white bears, pandas in Pushkar are priests responsible for giving visitors blessings. Once a donation has been made in honor of a loved one who has passed away, a panda will put the ceremonial red braid around a traveler’s arm, and represents the making of the blessing. While not a requirement in the town, guests will likely enjoy the common ceremony in this sacred town.
