Stroll the world's second-longest urban beach in Chennai
Located beside the Bay of Bengal on India's east coast, Chennai is known as the Gateway to the South. However, travelers on India tours are likely to find it is much more than a gateway to other destinations, as there is much to see and do in the country's fourth-largest city.
The most famous of Chennai's landmarks is probably Fort St. George, built on the north end of the city by the British in 1640. The impressive fort is a representation of the country's history, as it served as the original headquarters of the East India Trading Company and now is the State Legislature for the provincial government.
Also housed within the fort, St. Mary's Church was the first Protestant place of worship in India. It was preceded by the city's Catholic Basilica of Santhome, believed to house the remains of "doubting" St. Thomas.
Chennai's premiere natural attraction is Marina Beach, the second-longest urban beach in the world. While strolling along the sand, visitors can appreciate the beautiful buildings lining the beachfront drive, including the University of Madras.
Those who want a more tranquil outdoor experience in Chennai can go to the headquarters of the Theosophical Society, where they will find a peaceful garden that is home to a huge, 400-year-old banyan tree.
