The natural and cultural attractions of Darjeeling, India
Travelers on a tour of India can find the best of both worlds - an equal mixture of notable cultural and natural highlights - by visiting Darjeeling. This fascinating town is located on a steep hill in the Indian region of West Bengal.
The natural scenery may be the first thing to catch the eye of travelers, as Darjeeling provides a full view of the Himalayan mountains, containing the tallest summits in the world. Closer to the town itself is the mountain of Khangchendzonga, standing 8,598 meters tall. The wide fields of tea leaves at various plantations also provide an interesting view.
Within the city itself, man-made structures emblematic of India's rich history and culture can be seen and visited. Colonial mansions and churches from the centuries-long British occupation period are present alongside classic Hindu and Buddhist temples.
Those searching for impressive local cuisine need look no further than Darjeeling's various restaurants. Indian and Tibetan food are readily available, as is freshly brewed tea from the nearby plantations.
The nearby attraction of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is notable for being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. This train is also one of the inspirations for Wes Anderson's 2007 film The Darjeeling Limited.
