Walk through the gardens of Humayun's Tomb
During a visit to Delhi on a tour of India, travelers can see what many scholars consider to be a precursor to the Taj Mahal when they visit Humayun's Tomb, a massive and majestic mausoleum.
Located in the southern part of the city, Humayun's Tomb is one of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites found in Delhi. Built in 1562, the structure houses the remains of Humayun, the second Mughal emperor.
When tourists first arrive at the tomb, they will walk through a series of meticulously maintained gardens grown in the Persian "charbagh" ("four courners") style, with these lush green spaces thought by some to be the nicest in the city. They will also pass by a smaller octagonal structure that serves as the tomb for Iza Khan, a court noble who died 20 years before Humayun.
The vast mausoleum itself is made of rich red sandstone, creating a colorful contrast to the vibrant greens of the garden. Its domes and arches are excellent examples of Mughal architecture and are sure to remind visitors of the more famous Taj Mahal, a later memorial made of white marble.
