Walk with the tigers at Kanha National Park

India tours are deeply enriched by catching a glimpse of an elusive tiger. At Kanha National Park, travelers are much more likely to enjoy this treasured experience. 

Tramping through savannah grasslands and lush deciduous forests, many travelers agree that this park is as close to the setting of Rudyard Kipling's famous story "The Jungle Book" as modern India can provide. Changing from woodlands to scrubland to meadows, with elegant streams and rivers winding their way through it all, wildlife teems amid the distinct habitats. Major wildlife in the park includes such beloved animals as leopards, tigers, pythons, jungle cats and monkeys. Travelers will likely find the lesser-known barking deer, chousingha and nilgai to be just as intriguing.

While many come to Kanha for its tigers, the park is also known for its barasinghas, or swamp deers. Faced with extinction mere decades ago, Kanha is a sanctuary for the barasingha population, which has grown from 66 in 1970 to more than 400 today. Visitors have their best chance of seeing one in a large open meadow, where they are often roaming.

In addition to its wildlife, Kanha has a museum that further describes the park’s main natural attributes as well as tribal cultures.
