SOUTH AMERICA TOURS

While in Bolivia, travelers can check out the six historical Jesuit missions. Mission: Visit the Chiquitos Jesuit communities while touring Bolivia

Fans of the 1986 Robert DeNiro film "The Mission" will want to visit the Jesuit-founded Chiquitos settlements while on a Bolivia tour, but even those unfamiliar with the movie will likely find these sites fascinating.

As dramatized in the "The Mission," Jesuit Catholic missionaries arrived in South America in the 16th century to convert the local population. In Bolivia, that meant evangelizing to the Chiquitos tribe. Although conflict between the native civilizations and the missionaries was ongoing - eventually leading to the expulsion of the missionaries in 1767 - some of the Jesuits forged good relationships with the Chiquitos and created the six extraordinary "reducciones" that survive intact.

The missions' architecture and layout reflects the mixing of European and South American cultures. The churches - long, low, wooden structures with peaked roofs - are ornate and yet blend in with the surrounding residential structures. In addition to residential quarters, these towns featured workshops, schools and other municipal buildings such as almshouses.

Remarkably, these settlements - San Francisco Javier, Concepcion, Santa Ana, San Miguel, San Rafael and San Jose - have not been abandoned or fallen into ruin during the centuries since they were first built, but are still active communities that host an internationally recognized Baroque music festival every other year, reflecting the important role music played in forging the relationship between missionaries and the Chiquitos.
