Rio’s majesty from quintessential Sugarloaf

Visitors on Brazil tours who make their way through Rio de Janeiro will likely notice the large brown hump of rock at the city’s far end. While Sugarloaf may not look like much from a distance, closer inspection of the mountain is highly suggested. 

Accessible by cable car, helicopter or by rock climb, getting to the mountain’s sloping summit is half the fun. Routes can more easily be determined after travelers decide which vistas they are most enticed to explore. The Morro da Urca side offers impressive views of the area’s coastline, as well as the sparkling waters of Baia de Guanabara. With its own restaurant, playground, shops and even an outdoor theater, spending a day at Sugarloaf’s peak can be quite a trip.

To get better scenes of Rio, visitors can head to the mountain’s other vista, Pao de Acucar. From here, travelers can also get a bird’s eye view of the infamous Copacabana Beach. For those whose vertigo proves to be more unsettling than expected, Pao de Acucar also offers rejuvenating drinks from its beverage stand, a perfect solution to fried nerves.
