See the arid side of the Galapagos Islands at Dragon Hill

Rich with wildife, Dragon Hill features some of the saltiest and driest destinations for Galapagos tours. 

Named for the many land iguanas that live there, Dragon Hill is a designated wildlife location for the iguanas, which have suffered major population losses due to human-introduced threats to the island of Santa Cruz, like cats and goats. Once a suffering population, the endangered land iguana is quite plentiful here.

Trekking through Dragon Hill’s rocky conditions, travelers will notice the area has a distinct climate. Featuring cacti forests and Palo Santo trees, travelers may enjoy the arid conditions of the area.

On both land and water, Dragon Hill is packed with distinct creatures that range from easy to spot to extremely rare. Most travelers will come across Sally Lightfoot crabs, for example, in the nearby pools. Galapagos finches are commonly seen as well. Creatures such as lava herons and laughing gulls, however, are only spotted by lucky travelers.

Dragon Hill additionally features a hypersalinic, or extremely salty, lagoon. Wildlife, however, does not seem to mind, and visitors will likely see flamingos and Pintail ducks around or in the lagoon’s waters.
