Visit the Cradle of American Civilization in Peru
Travelers on Peru tours can explore the cradle of American civilization by visiting the ruins of the Sacred City of Caral.
Caral was the capital of a six-city society founded in Peru's Supe River Valley about 5,000 years ago, around the same time the earliest cities were rising in Mesopotamia, Egypt and China. The ruins are the oldest in the Americas. They are remarkably well-preserved and architecturally interesting, dominated by stepped pyramids originally used for making sacrifices. Visitors can also wander through amphitheatres, sunken circular plazas and ceremonial chambers.
The complexity of the city's layout attests to the sophistication of its ancient citizens, who developed an early version of quipu, a method of communication using patterns of tied knots.
Located on a desert plateau above the Supe River, in a region that has not been developed during the thousands of years since its construction, Caral is both a historic and beautiful site, and not mobbed by tourists, according to Lonely Planet. Despite its relative obscurity, Lonely Planet says it is visitor-friendly, with English plaques providing information about points of interest.
Caral is accessible by taxi from the town of Barranca. While in Barranca, visitors can wander through the labyrinthine Fortress of Paramonga.

SOUTH AMERICA TOURS
