Jose Ignacio

A trendy spa town, Jose Ignacio is found on the Uruguayan coast approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Punta del Este. For decades this region was all but uninhabited, and the first structure of importance - the iconic Jose Ignacio Lighthouse – was inaugurated in 1877. It was not until the early 20th century that the town began to develop, and by the second-half of the century, its modern design as an off-the-beaten path destination for luxury travelers had begun to take root. Today, Jose Ignacio is the ideal place to swim the Atlantic as the water here, particularly on Playa Mansa, is usually calm (please note, Playa Brava is an exception; here the waves are often formidable), to dine on fresh-caught seafood – the town is littered with excellent restaurants – and to enjoy a calm, bohemian and uniquely Uruguayan atmosphere.
