5 places to see during your tour of Greece

Located along the azure shores of the Aegean Sea, Greece is the birthplace of democracy and as such, one of the best places in the world to visit breathtaking monuments and ruins. In modern times, a tour of Greece will also yield moments of decadent relaxation and adventure.

With some of the best beaches in the world, inspiring historical sites and a vibrant and inviting culture, your Greece vacation is one you will not soon forget. Before you head out, here are a few of the best places to visit and things to see on your trip.

1. The Acropolis
This site is so incredible, that according to the monument's tourism website, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has dubbed the Acropolis the "Symbol of World Heritage." Known as the Acropolis of Athens, this once mighty citadel overlooks the city below and is home to a number of immensely interesting buildings.

The Pantheon, the famous structure that is easy to identify because of its characteristic pillars is one of the hallmarks of ancient Greek society. The site's web page stated that it is symbolic of Greek democracy and of Western Civilization more broadly. Dedicated to the goddess Athena Parthenos, the building is meant to embody wisdom.

Completed in the year 432 BC, the Acropolis has stood the test of time. Along with the Pantheon, you can explore other structures such as the Propylaea or the Temple of Athena Nike.

2. Mykonos
?Perhaps one of the most evocative and utterly beautiful places on the planet, the island paradise of Mykonos is perfect for any traveler. According to the site Visit Greece, ancient mythology claimed that the island was created using the bodies of giants conquered by Hercules. In modern times however, giants are few and far between, while luxury and comfort are abundant.

Between vacationing retirees, wandering students and the occasional celebrity, there is plenty to do in Mykonos outside of enjoying some fun in the sun. A tour of Greece would not be complete without indulging in some world-class seafood, and this tiny island is a great place to treat yourself to an unforgettable meal.

Select the right bottle of wine and sample through endless mezéses, traditional small plates enjoyed in Greece. Between unbelievable cheeses, fresh vegetables and exquisite seafood, the food in Mykonos will leave you ready for a nap by the beach.

3. Delphi
Another UNESCO World Heritage site, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi is yet another rousing monument that bespeaks the majesty of ancient Greece. Overlooking the coastal plains that surround the city of Phocis, the temple once served as a sanctuary for many decades where the powerful oracle could be consulted.

Today, the site holds a certain level of inherent nobility, but also serves as an active archeological site. During your tour of Greece, you can have a private guide take you through Delphi to get an intimate and illuminating experience.

4. Crete
The largest and perhaps most unique island in all of Greece, Crete has a storied ancient history as well as many modern amenities to enjoy. From 2700 to 1420 BC, the island was the home of Minoan civilization, a distinct society that greatly influenced classical Greece. Knossos, for example, is home to many great Minoan monuments to inspect.

Today, Crete still boasts a special rhythm including a distinct dialect of Greek and separate music and culture. One spot, Rethymno is particularly exciting to explore. This little village has the same tight streets and architectural design that is emblematic of the Mediterranean.

5. Santorini
?According to U.S. World News and Report, one of the first things you should do during a stop in Santorini along your tour of Greece is to head to the beach. While the water is the same crystal blue as it is elsewhere in the Aegean, Santorini is special because its beaches may be black or red.

Fantastic buildings painted white and blue dot the hillsides that overlook these spectacular strips of sand, making Santorini one of the most charming spots on the map. As a result of an ancient volcanic explosion - which some say may have doomed the lost city of Atlantis - Santorini is actually made up of two islands and many inlets. U.S. World News and Report stated that the towns of Fira and Oia are great destinations for shopping and dining, while there are many of smaller villages and towns to drink in as well.

All told, Santorini is perfect for a relaxing vacation. The weather is utterly spectacular, and with a wide range of beaches to chose from, this may be the most luxurious stop during your tour of Greece.
