Day 2: Accra

A private vehicle and guide are provided, and at your disposal for the day.

The town of Teshie is also known as the home of famous design coffins, invented in the 1950s by Seth Kane Kwei, and still made in the Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshop (run by Eric Adjetey Anang) and by several other artists. These aren’t your ordinary, run-of-the-mill coffins but a special tradition of coffin-making that dates back centuries in this suburb of Accra. The artisan trade is passed down through the family structure and is regarded with great respect by others in the community. The wood is carved from a particular type of tree that grows in Ghana and has good weight and texture for coffin construction and painting. The wood is then whittled into giant and marvelous shapes. As a way to celebrate the deceased, the coffin is shaped into a large, colorful object that suggests the person’s trade while living. A fisherman would receive a coffin in the shape of a fish, a fruit seller’s coffin could be a pineapple, a photographer’s would be a camera. The coffin makers even create huge drink cabinets for bars in the shape of a bottle of coke or Guinness beer.

Depart for a half day city tour of Accra visiting the National Museum of History and Ethnography with exhibits that reflect the heritage of Ghana through-out history to the present. This Museum houses a varied collection of Ghanaian artifacts. Drive through Old Accra. This is a contrast of Victorian, Dutch and post-colonial architectural. You will drive past James Fort built in 1673, Old Accra Square and the Post Office. Stop to visit the Ussher Fort, one of three European forts in Accra which have survived the times. Interact with the local people. For the adventurous visit the Light House built to guide ships. Continue to visit Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, burial place of the first President of Ghana. This Mausoleum has been visited by many world dignitaries. Your last stop for the tour will be at the Arts and Crafts market where you may try out your bargaining skills on the local vendors and to “shop till you drop”. Drive past the Independence Arch and the Black Star Square, Accra’s ceremonial grounds, to visit the Arts and Crafts market. View from the distance, Christiansborg Castle, former office and residence of the President of Ghana.

Does the silky, smooth taste of chocolate invigorate your very thoughts, and salivate your every taste bud? If so, this tour is for you.  In the comfort of a private vehicle, head out to visit the first cocoa farm established in Ghana, at the Tetteh Ouarshie Cocoa Farm.  It is believed that the very first cocoa plants in Ghana came to be as a result of the planting of seeds which derived from the nearby Fernando Po Island, located just south of the Cameroonian mainland.  The fertile environment of Ghana provided the ideal growing environment for the cocoa plants to flourish, which resulted in Ghana becoming one of the largest cocoa producer in the world, at one point. During the tour visit the farm-house museum and learn about the rich history of cocoa production in Ghana. Transfer time approximately 1 hour to/from Accra.

Hop aboard a private vehicle and travel roughly 45 minutes from Accra to visit the picturesque Aburi Botanical Gardens. Opened in March, 1890, this garden covers 64.8 hectares and overlooks Accra's coastal plain from an elevation of 370 to 460 metres above sea level. The Aburi Botanic Gardens is a must experience for every Ghanaian as well as visitors to Ghana. The gardens are home to a large variety of subtropical trees and plants from around the world. The beauty and uniqueness of this garden stem from its relatively bracing, relieving climate and the lushly scenic setting. Butterfly and bird lovers would love Aburi Gardens for the presence of many species that come so near as if wanting to perch on your head. Another delight of Aburi Botanic Gardens is the blossoming mixture of indigenous and exotic trees of global importance, aesthetics and medicinal properties. Learn about both Ghanaian history and these incredible plants as your guide walks you through this scenic park. These plants are the ideal habitat for various species of birds and butterflies, which flock to this special location. Transfer time is approximately 45 minutes to/from Accra.

  • Sharon M. — December 16, 2018 — Africa

This was the trip of a lifetime. I would not have gotten as much out of the trip if it were not for Evan, Kensington’s accommodations, and the guides! I had an amazing time on Safari, at Victoria Falls, and in Cape Town. I can’t remember all of the names of my guides but they were all knowledgeable and passionate not only about their respective countries, but passionate about their field. I felt safe and received the best education from all of them which is one of the main goals of my trips. Thank you Kensington!

  • Norah G. — September 05, 2018 — Africa

  • Jeanne E. — January 12, 2019 — Africa

Our guide Youssef was very knowledgeable and taught us so much about Morocco. Everything went smoothly and he executed the plan with expertise. My husband and I were very pleased with the itinerary, the accommodations that had to be made to it, and the surprises that Youssef made happen. He added a personal touch that was above and beyond. Our driver Mohamed is the consummate professional - way beyond expectations.

  • Annemarie R. — September 09, 2018 — Africa

Amanda was amazing. From Day 1 I felt I was speaking with someone who was well experienced and informed about planning an African Safari experience. She kept my budget in mind without comprising on the experience. Everything exceeded my expectations. She made it a lifetime memory and for the reason we shall return to Africa once again with the support of Kensington Tours. In today's complex world of travel, so much can go wrong but everything went seamlessly. Well done!

  • Susan T. — August 11, 2018 — Africa

One of our best trips ever! We had a phenomenal time and everything went off without a hitch.

  • Stephen B. — August 16, 2018 — Africa

The trip was spectacular. We managed to view more than 150 animals and birds. Each location was different - guide, accommodation, scenery and food. They were all our favorites but I would make special mention of Zelda North, our guide (and now friend) in South Africa. I recommend that anyone traveling to South Africa, Cape Town, in particular, make certain to request Zelda for your guide. She is just awesome and personalized our visit in a way that was perfectly suited to our particular likes and needs.
