Kenya speaks to the kind of traveler for whom the word adventure means more than “going someplace new.” Some are drawn here by the lure of the Big Five (the safari set’s must-see animals), others by the awe-inspiring openness of the grassy highlands and boundless skies. But despite its natural grandeur, Kenya makes plenty of room for smaller, more personal moments, too, provided you know how to find them. Guided game drives bring the wild creatures closer, walking safaris reveal details you’d otherwise miss, and encounters with the nomadic warriors who live on these great plains put a human face on a land best known for its wildlife.

That intimacy starts with an up-close encounter with orphaned elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust before embarking on a bush walk with Samburu warriors and a private 4x4 drive through Samburu National Reserve. Later, take game drives through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, track giraffes and other animals on game drives through Masai Mara National Reserve (including a nighttime excursion to spot nocturnal beasts), and walk the shores of the Sabaringo river in search of exotic birds. Kenya may be vast, but it’s an intimate kind of vast. Discover how small big can be.

Day 1: Nairobi

For your added comfort, an English speaking airport representative will help you navigate through the Nairobi departures hall. This representative will walk you through the welcome package documents, your itinerary and answer any questions you may have.

While in our care, your safety and security are our number one priority. As such, in the unlikely event of serious illness or injury, all guests are provided with a “Flying Doctors” insurance policy. This emergency evacuation insurance covers the cost of the evacuation flight back to Nairobi for treatment, however, does not cover the cost of any medical treatment received. We highly recommend travel insurance for full coverage.

Enjoy a private transfer between your hotel and the airport in Nairobi.

Day 2: Nairobi - Mt Kenya

The David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is a world renowned rescue and rehabilitation initiative primarily focused on the well-being of elephants and rhino’s. Arriving in time to participate the morning feeding, which takes place between 11am and 12pm, you will have the chance to meet the elephants as well as other endangered animals like the black rhino. Day 3: Mt Kenya - Samburu

Your guide will drive you down the cool slopes of Mt. Kenya, across the plain of Laikipia, to your finally destination, the sandy desert region of Samburu. This scenic commute will take approximately 2 to 3 hours.

Leave behind your safari vehicle for a completely unique experience: a Samburu bush walk safari, accompanied by expert warriors. Travel at a more relaxed pace, and pick up on minute details that would have gone unnoticed in a vehicle, surrounded by the sounds of the wild. A walking safari offers the unique possibility to approach larger game animals at a closer proximity, for a truly unforgettable game-viewing experience.

Accommodation: Elephant Bedroom Camp

Set on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu National Reserve surrounded by doum palms and other beautiful indigenous trees and shrubs sits this small and exclusive camp of 12 luxury tents. All tents are furnished in rustic African style while offering all the comforts expected of a luxury Camp (hot & cold running water, electricity and herbal products). The lounge and dining area offer vibrant safari colours with original oil paintings, soft intimate lighting designed to relax guests returning from an exciting game drive. The tented, open-front lounge faces the river and provides a choice of comfortable sofas and armchairs. You can also watch the river from the dining area, the hammocks hung between the trees or the seating on the riverbank. Huge herds of elephant, prides of lion or the solitary leopard amongst other game are regular visitors around the camp providing excellent game viewing in spectacular scenic background of rugged rolling hills.

During your stay enjoy day and night time game drives, guided bush walks, mountain biking, horseback riding safaris, visit the lodge's ranch, sign up for cultural tours, biplane safari, quad biking and more. Since Borana is a private property, there is guaranteed exclusivity, making every aspect of the safari experience personal, peaceful and uninterrupted. Other activities include fishing, rock climbing or even paragliding, make the suggestion and staff will try to make it happen.

Each cottage is comfortable and cozy with unique stylings featuring fireplaces, private verandas, and view over the Samangua Valley and Lake where elephants love to swim.  The sitting and dining rooms are within the main lodge. Log fires, rosewood tables, and snug sofas create the atmosphere for entertaining evenings. A stunning horizon pool is ideal for relaxing around with lunchtime Pimms. Day 6: Laikipia

Borana has a fleet of radio-linked, custom-built, four-wheel drive, open-sided vehicles that are driven by supremely knowledgeable driver/guides. Since Borana is private property, there are no game park rules and no one else will ever obscure your view of the big game that lives here. Enjoy shared game drives in the morning and afternoon when animals are more active.

Night game drives - when most animals are active - are very popular, allowing guests an insight into the nocturnal life of the bush that is denied them in most of the parks. Our hugely experienced guides know the ranch intimately and can usually find the animals that guests most want to see.

One of the most tranquil ways to see wildlife is on a guided bush walk. Your experienced guides lead these hikes and share their extensive knowledge of the land and its wildlife, flora and fauna and birds. Seeing big game on foot is extremely satisfying and allows you to track game in completely safety. The slower pace means that you also have a chance to see smaller animals that they would miss or scare off if traveling at a faster speed.

Day 7: Laikipia - Masai Mara

Enjoy a short flight from Laikipia with service to the Masai Mara, Kenya. Approximate flight duration is 45 minutes.

Please note, strict luggage restrictions apply to this flight: 1) Maximum weight allowance of 32 lbs (15 kg) is permitted per person. 2) Baggage must be soft-shelled and not exceed dimensions of 21.5” (55cm) x 13.5” (35cm) x 10” (25cm). 3) Additional baggage allowance can be arranged at additional cost, please speak to your Destination Expert for more information.

A representative from your lodge will pick you up and transfer you between your accommodations and the nearby airstrip.

Head out this afternoon on an exciting game viewing adventure. The locations visited will be determined by your expert guide as they have an intimate understanding of the daily routines of animals and how best to track them. On this afternoon excursion, visit several wildlife hot-spots with an aim to espy elusive animals such as the leopard. These spotted cats blend almost seamlessly into the tall grass and shrubbery, and are even more challenging to spot when in their favorite hangout, the trees. Exploring the region, your guide will take you to nearby watering holes where on a hot day you’ll spot many birds and mammals, including, with luck, the elusive leopard. After a thrilling afternoon game drive, you will be returned to your lodge in time to freshen up for a delicious safari dinner.

The Kichwa Tembo concession is one of the few places where guests can experience night game drives in the Masai Mara. As the sun sinks over the vast horizon, the African bush comes to life with predators and other nocturnal creatures. Guests may have the opportunity to observe fascinating species not normally encountered in daylight.

Accommodation: Kichwa Tembo

Laid out along the Sabaringo River on the edge of the Oloololo escarpment, &Beyond Kichwa Tembo Masai Mara Tented Camp looks out onto the plains of the Masai Mara. Set on a private concession leased from Masai landlords in the north of the Mara, the camp offers total seclusion and abundant wildlife. It was included as one of Travel & Leisure’s 500 Best Hotels, as selected by their readers.  Each of the tents and suites are laid out on immaculate grounds, with leisurely groups of warthog feeding right outside the tent doors.  Browse for souvenirs from your safari in the well-stocked Safari Shop or share your experiences around an evening cocktail in the bar. Meals packed with fresh ingredients and flavoured with aromatic spices are served in the simple but elegant dining room, open to the warm breezes coming off the Mara or beneath myriad stars looking out onto the African plains.

Day 8: Masai Mara

Just like the wildlife, your day’s adventure will begin bright and early this morning. Alongside an experienced tracker-guide, set out for the day’s first game drive and discover the dazzling bio-diversity of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The most recognized animals are known worldwide as the African Big 5, and this group includes the African elephant, Cape buffalo, rhinoceros, leopard, and the king of the beasts, the lion. The term “Big 5” was first coined by big-game hunters as a way to acknowledge that these species were the most difficult and dangerous to track and hunt, however, in subsequent years the term has been adopted and re-purposed by the tourism industry and painted in patently positive light, focusing now on the preservation and protection of these magnificent creatures. Numerous other species of bird and wildlife also inhabit this dynamic region, including hyenas, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, zebras, vultures, cranes, eagles, falcons, and ostriches, many of which you’ll spot on this morning drive through the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Spend the day soaking in the spectacle of the famous wildebeest migration. This annual migration takes place throughout the Serengeti and Masai Mara and is one of the safari highlights of Africa. The wildebeest migration moves in a basic clockwise direction throughout the year in the Serengeti eco-system and moves north into the Masai Mara from June/July through to September/October. Sightings cannot be guaranteed as the herds move according to availability of food sources and migration movements can be erratic. The herds are accompanied by zebra and Thomson's gazelle. With this plenty of plains game the local predators such as leopard, lion and hyena are never far behind.

Day 9: Masai Mara - Nairobi

A representative from your lodge will pick you up and transfer you between your accommodations and the nearby airstrip.

Your guide will drive you from Masai Mara to Nairobi, with short stops for refreshments and souvenirs along the way. Be aware that during this commute you will drive across some unfinished, bumpy patches of road. This drive will take approximately six hours.

Please note that the first half of this drive will be on paved roads and the last half will be rough & bumpy roads.

Today, a local guide and private vehicle will accompany you as you set out to explore Nairobi.

The opportunity to explore the local markets and shops presents itself today as so you can interact with the local vendors in search for the perfect handicraft or souvenir for yourself or your loved ones.
