Day 2: Nairobi

Today, a local guide and private vehicle will accompany you as you set out to explore Nairobi.

The David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is a world renowned rescue and rehabilitation initiative primarily focused on the well-being of elephants and rhino’s. Since 1977, the Orphan’s Project has assisted in the recovery and reintegration of more than 150 elephants, returning them to the wild herds of Tsavo. Today, stop in for a visit to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, found at the Nairobi Game Park Headquarters. Arriving in time to participate the morning feeding, which takes place between 11am and 12pm, you will have the chance to meet the elephants as well as other endangered animals like the black rhino. This shared visit does not require the fostering of an elephant, however, if you are interested in contributing to the orphanages efforts, please visit https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/asp/fostering.asp to learn more.

Make the trip to the Giraffe Center to learn about the world’s tallest terrestrial animal and to see these wonderful creatures up close and, if you so choose, to feed them by hand! After the Giraffe Center, visit the Karen Blixen Museum – a home once lived in by Karen – and made famous in the film “Out of Africa” featuring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford (consider watching the movie before setting out on your trip). After exploring this landmark, head to Kazuri Beads. An all-woman craft workshop renowned for making handmade ceramic jewelry and pottery, Kazuri – which means “small and beautiful” in Swahili – is a co-operative enterprise founded decades ago by an English woman who wanted to help single mothers become self-supporting. The clay beads, jewelry and pottery are as amazing as the story of its people, making Kazuri Beads the perfect place to round out your day in Nairobi.

Day 3: Nairobi - Naivasha

Settle into a privately driven vehicle with your guide and transfer from Nairobi to Lake Naivasha. Admire the scenery as you make your way through rural Kenya and into the Great Rift Valley, an area boasting quaint little villages which dot the traditional African landscape. Prepare yourself for you first glimpse of Mount Longonot as you make route through the Hell’s Gate National Park before arriving to Lake Naivasha. This drive will take approximately one hour and 30 minutes to complete, depending on traffic and weather conditions.

Prepare for an exciting and unique excursion to the Crescent Island Wildlife Sanctuary while in the Lake Naivasha area. Admire the scenery as you take a short boat trip from the mainland to this dynamic location where you’ll have the opportunity to get in some wildlife viewing at a very relaxed pace. As there is little to no threat from some of the “Big 5” predators, the various species of wildlife, birdlife and flora live quite freely here, providing visitors with some great photo opportunities. Some of the many mammals that can be seen here include zebras, impalas, buffaloes, giraffes, and hippos. Resident bird species include herons, black cranes, lily trotters, ospreys and fish eagles.

Accommodation: Chui Lodge

Pleasantly situated in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, Chui Lodge is perfectly set in the Oserian Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, shielded by Euphorbia trees, a multitude of wildlife roam. The luxury cottages are brimming over with a unique African authenticity. Even the main building is privy to this intricate care, with hand carved art marking its structure. Dining is of the finest quality, with fresh vegetables and dairy products arriving daily from the nearby farms. The reserve is superb for observing flamingoes, birdlife, leopard, and rhino. Be sure to visit the rose farm and come back with a wonderful fragrance on your skin. By the nature of its very name, guests most frequently catch up with the elusive leopards in this private spectacular sanctuary.

Day 4: Naivasha - Masai Mara

Your guide will drive you from Naivasha to Masai Mara. This drive will take approximately five to six hours. Drive times may be longer in the rainy season (April to early May and November). Stop for refreshments and souvenir shopping at roadside stands along the way or head straight to the park. Enjoy game viewing as you enter Masai Mara and drive to your camp.

Enjoy a box lunch while you travel (included in tour price).

Head out this afternoon on an exciting game viewing adventure. The locations visited will be determined by your expert guide as they have an intimate understanding of the daily routines of animals and how best to track them. On this afternoon excursion, visit several wildlife hot-spots with an aim to espy elusive animals such as the leopard. These spotted cats blend almost seamlessly into the tall grass and shrubbery, and are even more challenging to spot when in their favorite hangout, the trees. Exploring the region, your guide will take you to nearby watering holes where on a hot day you’ll spot many birds and mammals, including, with luck, the elusive leopard. After a thrilling afternoon game drive, you will be returned to your lodge in time to freshen up for a delicious safari dinner.

Accommodation: Mara West

Nestled against a wooded thicket and surrounded by savannah, Mara West combines luxury accommodations with the breathtaking adventures of an unforgettable African safari. The rooms are perched in secluded spots on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, offering guests panoramic views of the Masai Mara Game Reserve below and a sense of exclusive privacy. The camp is home to resident herds of gazelles, impalas, and zebras, as well as an abundance of bird life, and is visited regularly by a variety of wildlife passing to and from the park. The stunning beauty of the Mara, the uninterrupted grazing of the antelope, the night calls of the bush babies, and the early morning chorus of songbirds, all   combined with the comfortable and tasteful ambiance of the camp, is part of the Mara West experience and what makes it a unique paradise for nature lovers.

Day 5: Masai Mara

The famed Masai Mara Game Reserve was named after the indigenous inhabitants of this land, the Masai, and the provider of life to the area, the Mara River. Game viewing is almost guaranteed at some point along the Mara River, and your experienced tracker-guide will know all the best spots to explore to maximize your chances of seeing some of the many animals that call this land their home. Be sure to have your camera handy as amazing photo opportunities will present themselves; elephants on the riverbanks and hippos in shallow waters are common sights in this area.

In between game drives, there are plenty of activities to ensure your free time is filled with engaging or relaxing activities. Arrange a boma-style dinner and dine fireside, chat with fellow guests in the common areas and recount your adventures, relax within the property grounds and watch as wildlife passes before your eyes, grab a refreshment and curl up with a good book, and enjoy sundowner cocktails to welcome the starry night sky; the choice is yours! Alternatively, a range of optional activities (at additional cost) are also available, including hot air balloon safaris and interactive school visits.

On today’s afternoon game drive, the choice is up to you! Search for the Big 5 or expand your horizons to discover some of the regions lesser known animals. The Masai Mara not only has a rich mix of mammals both large and small, but is also host to an incredible array of birdlife that includes approximately 450 different species, from the fierce bateleur (or short tailed eagle) to the musical sooty chat.

Day 6: Masai Mara

Set out in the early morning on a "migration" inspired game drive with your tracker-guide. The journey today will take you into the heart of the Masai Mara plains in search of the many grazing species that take part in the annual migration, an event that has been occurring for centuries. Massive herds of zebras, gazelles, impalas, and of course wildebeest furiously feed and thunderously march from the Serengeti and through the Mara area every year from July to October. Today, set out to spot these enormous herds for yourself, an incredible experience few will ever have the privilege of witnessing firsthand.

Set out this afternoon with your tracker-guide on another exciting game drive through the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The Mara is one of only a few places left in Africa where guests can still spot free roaming rhinos in the wild, as – troublingly - it is estimated that there are only 4,000 black rhinos left on the continent. Today your guide will take you to locations where rhino sightings have been recently reported with an aim to bring you within camera range of these lumbering, beautiful giants.

Day 7: Masai Mara - Nairobi

Your guide will drive you from Masai Mara to Nairobi, with short stops for refreshments and souvenirs along the way. The drive will take approximately 6 hours.

Please note that the first half of this drive will be on paved roads and the last half will be rough & bumpy roads.

The opportunity to explore the local markets and shops presents itself today as so you can interact with the local vendors in search for the perfect handicraft or souvenir for yourself or your loved ones.

Before departing Nairobi, make a stop at the local Kensington office for free internet and lounge access. If you so desire, reservations for dinner at a local restaurant can also be arranged. Please speak to your Destination Expert in order to make dining reservations, and also be sure to mention any dietary restrictions or preferences.

  • Angelia M — June 22, 2019 — Africa

My Kenya trip was seriously the best trip of my life, and I absolutely loved every second of it! It was my dream vacation and the reality far exceeded the dream. Catherine, my trip consultant, answered all of my many questions and made sure everything went super smoothly. Daniel, my guide, was so fun, interesting, and informative. He went out of his way to make sure my trip was special. I really can't put into words how much I loved it other than I'm already thinking about another trip to Africa. I will definitely be using Kensington Tours again!

  • Chris S — May 17, 2019 — Africa

Our guide Elisha was absolutely incredible! He was friendly, helpful, funny, and remarkably knowledgeable about the area, the animals, and especially the birds! The accommodations were excellent and the staff at those places was wonderful. The Kubu Kubu tent camp in Serengeti was particularly special, and we felt truly appreciated and pampered by the staff. With their smiling help, we even learned some Swahili! Thank you for the trip of a lifetime.

  • Paul E — May 01, 2019 — Africa

We had no idea what to expect on this trip but exceeded even our wildest imagination. Daniel, with Kensington, laid out a wonderful plan. The upfront quality and detail on the proposal really sold us. The guides and local support crews on the trip, were on time, personable, and knowledgeable. Special shout out to Shamiel with Ilios Travel in Cape Town. He was joy and clearly loved sharing Cape Town with us.

  • Thomas S — June 14, 2019 — Africa

Karen Johnson was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and very friendly. Karen was readily available during the planning process and took the time to talk with and listen to us to find out about our wants and needs and ultimately designed our perfect vacation. We can not speak highly enough about her abilities.

  • Michael S — June 13, 2019 — Africa

The trip was the best thing we have ever done. The people we dealt with were professional and made sure every part of our trip was trouble free.

  • Raymond D — March 22, 2019 — Africa

The guides were friendly and very accommodating throughout my trip. One of the guides took me to the oldest tea house as a bonus on my tour. It was great being with the people and enjoying a cup of tea. My driver invited me to have Turkish coffee which was a very nice touch to my trip. The accommodations were phenomenal, being near the pyramids was outside of this world. The Kempinski Nile Hotel Garden City Cairo was a wonderful hotel as well. Gesa was great to work with! She was so nice and accommodating throughout the whole planning process. Especially during for the first part of my trip which had nothing to do with my tours with Kensington Tours. She planned everything out perfectly on my trip.

  • Donna M — June 02, 2019 — Africa

The Kensington Kenya and Tanzania African Safari itinerary and experience exceeded all expectations. From the moment we were met at the airport, we were completely cared for. Our Destination Expert, Erin Cotton, even checked in on us during the trip. Our guides were excellent; Albert and Steve were exceptionally knowledgeable, organized and considerate. The accommodations were all fantastic with friendly staff, comfortable rooms for the family, and great food. Although the balloon trip over the Mara River was a highlight, each game drive was a memorable adventure as or guides toured Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and the Masai Mara. We got to spend some time in the local villages and dine with some of the other tourists in the middle of the bush and on a spectacular cliff overlooking the plains of Kenya and Tanzania. Most of all, every morning we looked forward to spending time with our guides searching for animals and learning more about the whole ecosystem.

  • Catherine L — May 05, 2019 — Africa

Everything was absolutely wonderful - from the planning to the execution. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Will definitely work with Kensington on my next trip! (I'm headed to Hong Kong this December and think I should probably do some exploring while I'm there!)

  • Jennifer W — December 04, 2018 — Africa

Our trip was amazing! The accommodations were lovely. Our safari guide made the experience memorable! Our only job was to relax and enjoy. The guide for our day in Sawato and to visit the Apartheid museum was extremely knowledgeable. This is our second trip with Kensington Tours. We will definitely use again.

  • Tanya R — February 20, 2019 — Africa

We left everything to our tour rep, Louise Baer. She did a fantastic job. We had no expectations at all but were absolutely overwhelmed with our accommodations. We were treated so well by everyone. It was an unbelievable trip of a lifetime. Our drivers were fantastic. I felt so safe. Brilliant holiday. Thank you, Kensington!
