The Samburu have learned to peacefully coexist with nature and their attitude is one of tolerance for the wildlife that they live alongside. Your camp offers a variety of experiences that allow you to interact with the local people. You may visit a nearby Samburu homestead and participate in the daily ritual of milking goats, corralling the cattle for the night, and learning about Samburu’s fascinating traditional costumes. You can also spend an afternoon with the Sarara Sabache Women’s Group being beaded or beading your favorite shirt or hat. This is a wonderful chance to sit among the Samburu women, learn the unique skills of their traditional beading, and perhaps take an authentic piece of Africa back home with you. Another unparalleled opportunity is a visit with Il Konono blacksmiths. Get an insight into the tradition of men passing down from generation to generation the skills of crafting spears, goat bells, knives, and jewelry. Watch your very own bracelet being made and feel a true connection with Africa and its beautiful people.

To walk freely in the African bush alongside a Samburu guide is likely a highlight of any safari adventure in northern Kenya. Leave the camp behind and venture out into the surrounding wilderness to get an intimate look at this mesmerizing part of East Africa. As you hike through the shrubbery, let your guide teach you about the plants, insects, birds, and the local culture. With each step gain an even greater appreciation for the Samburu people’s connection with this magical land. Every now and then, simply take a moment to stop and soak in the dramatic surrounding vistas of Matthew’s Range peaks carpeted with forests of juniper and cycads. This is a truly unforgettable bush experience!

Drinks and dinner might be served on the terrace overlooking the pool or somewhere a little wilder for even more excitement. After a game drive or a bush walk, the pool beckons. The temptation to remain submerged and studying a herd of elephant, impala or warthogs interacting at the waterhole below may make you late for tea.

Day 5: Matthews Range

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the first ever community-run elephant sanctuary in all of Africa. The population of these sentient giants dwindled in the past due to poaching but now the Samburu people act as their protectors. Orphaned elephants are raised in the Sanctuary only to be released into the wild when they are ready to live on their own. Today, visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary for a chance to learn about the efforts of the local community to save these majestic mammals. During your visit you are paired with a keeper who accompanies you the entire time and tells you about Reteti’s work and answers all your questions. From a special viewing platform watch the elephants come in from their walk to receive their bottles and then have some mud hole playtime. Afterwards you will be given a behind-the-scenes tour of the sanctuary. A visit to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is an inspiring way of learning about animal protection and conservation efforts of the resilient peoples of northern Kenya.

Equivalent to the migration in its uniqueness is this age-old tradition of the Samburu people bringing their livestock to water in semi desert environment with an evening changing of the guard which sees wildlife pour in to use the same water source as humans. Today get an unprecedented opportunity to witness as local families take their family herds of cattle to the singing wells where they dig for water to fill up their troughs. Each family owns one well and they sing to their livestock as they bring the water up. The cows recognize the familiar tones of their family’s song and come to down to the well to be watered. Amidst the light, color, dust, bells, singing and the naked Samburu, the scene is almost biblical in that it has remained unchanged for centuries. This experience provides you with a most unique insight into the lives of the Samburu.

The island is a major breeding site of the Nile Crocodile which earned it the nickname of ‘Crocodile Island’. Along with the two other nearby parks, the Central Island National Park has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, climb aboard a boat and sail across the mysterious Lake Turkana to explore this unique bastion of tranquility only accessible to few. You may hike to the top of one of the craters and enjoy the breathtaking views of this vast alkaline lake, dubbed by some the ‘Jade Sea’ due to its mesmerizing color. Sit back and relax during this short, scenic flight from Nairobi to Masai Mara today. Approximate flight duration is 45 minutes.

A representative from your lodge will pick you up and transfer you between your accommodations and the nearby airstrip.

Your expert guide will meet you and other guests at your lodge for an afternoon game viewing drive in and around the Masai Mara, today focusing on lions. Typically found in the savannah and grasslands, lions live on average between 10 and 14 years, and are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females, their offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, while the highly distinctive male lion is easily recognized by its mane and large face; one of the most widely recognized animal symbols in human culture.

Day 9: Masai Mara

Today you will set out on an early morning game drive with your expert guide and others from your lodge. The Masai Mara is home to a diverse range of animals. The park is home to the Big Five (Lion, Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo and Leopard) and numerous other species including Thomson's and Grant's Gazelles, Impalas, Topics, Hartebeest, Zebra and Masai Giraffe. It's also home to over 450 species of birdlife; among them are vultures, marabou storks, secretary birds, hornbills, crowned cranes, ostriches, long-crested eagles and African pygmy-falcons.

This afternoon, head out on an exciting game drive with your guide and others from your lodge, keeping your eyes peeled for giraffes. Giraffes usually inhabit savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands. They prefer areas with plenty of acacia trees, an important food source, and can browse at heights that most other herbivores cannot reach. While adults are nearly invulnerable to predation, lions, leopards, spotted hyenas and wild dogs prey on baby calves. Giraffes commonly gather together to eat or socialize for a few hours and then roam off to graze separately. Males establish social hierarchies through "neckings," which are combat bouts where the neck is used as a weapon. Based on these displays, dominant males gain mating rights to females, who then bear the sole responsibility for raising their young.

Day 10: Masai Mara

Today you'll set out early on your morning game drive with your guide and other guests from the lodge. The Masai Mara is most famous for its exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle and the wildebeest. Sightings of these incredible herds cannot be guaranteed as the herds follow their food source, but your chances of sightings are best as the herds move north into Masai Mara from the Serengeti, from July to October.

Head out in the afternoon on a game drive with others guests of the lodge. As the sun descends and the plains begin to cool, wildlife emerges from the shelter of shade and becomes more active. See if you can spot a herd of elephants as they approach watering holes and rivers to cool down with a drink and mud bath. The largest living land animal on Earth, elephants live – on average – between 50 to 70 years. African elephants are the largest of their species, and with any luck, will be seen firsthand during your exploration of the Masai Mara.

  • Angelia M — June 22, 2019 — Africa

My Kenya trip was seriously the best trip of my life, and I absolutely loved every second of it! It was my dream vacation and the reality far exceeded the dream. Catherine, my trip consultant, answered all of my many questions and made sure everything went super smoothly. Daniel, my guide, was so fun, interesting, and informative. He went out of his way to make sure my trip was special. I really can't put into words how much I loved it other than I'm already thinking about another trip to Africa. I will definitely be using Kensington Tours again!

  • Chris S — May 17, 2019 — Africa

Our guide Elisha was absolutely incredible! He was friendly, helpful, funny, and remarkably knowledgeable about the area, the animals, and especially the birds! The accommodations were excellent and the staff at those places was wonderful. The Kubu Kubu tent camp in Serengeti was particularly special, and we felt truly appreciated and pampered by the staff. With their smiling help, we even learned some Swahili! Thank you for the trip of a lifetime.

  • Paul E — May 01, 2019 — Africa

We had no idea what to expect on this trip but exceeded even our wildest imagination. Daniel, with Kensington, laid out a wonderful plan. The upfront quality and detail on the proposal really sold us. The guides and local support crews on the trip, were on time, personable, and knowledgeable. Special shout out to Shamiel with Ilios Travel in Cape Town. He was joy and clearly loved sharing Cape Town with us.

Karen Johnson was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and very friendly. Karen was readily available during the planning process and took the time to talk with and listen to us to find out about our wants and needs and ultimately designed our perfect vacation. We can not speak highly enough about her abilities.

The trip was the best thing we have ever done. The people we dealt with were professional and made sure every part of our trip was trouble free.

The guides were friendly and very accommodating throughout my trip. One of the guides took me to the oldest tea house as a bonus on my tour. It was great being with the people and enjoying a cup of tea. My driver invited me to have Turkish coffee which was a very nice touch to my trip. The accommodations were phenomenal, being near the pyramids was outside of this world. The Kempinski Nile Hotel Garden City Cairo was a wonderful hotel as well. Gesa was great to work with! She was so nice and accommodating throughout the whole planning process. Especially during for the first part of my trip which had nothing to do with my tours with Kensington Tours. She planned everything out perfectly on my trip.

The Kensington Kenya and Tanzania African Safari itinerary and experience exceeded all expectations. From the moment we were met at the airport, we were completely cared for. Our Destination Expert, Erin Cotton, even checked in on us during the trip. Our guides were excellent; Albert and Steve were exceptionally knowledgeable, organized and considerate. The accommodations were all fantastic with friendly staff, comfortable rooms for the family, and great food. Although the balloon trip over the Mara River was a highlight, each game drive was a memorable adventure as or guides toured Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and the Masai Mara. We got to spend some time in the local villages and dine with some of the other tourists in the middle of the bush and on a spectacular cliff overlooking the plains of Kenya and Tanzania. Most of all, every morning we looked forward to spending time with our guides searching for animals and learning more about the whole ecosystem.

Everything was absolutely wonderful - from the planning to the execution. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Will definitely work with Kensington on my next trip! (I'm headed to Hong Kong this December and think I should probably do some exploring while I'm there!)

Our trip was amazing! The accommodations were lovely. Our safari guide made the experience memorable! Our only job was to relax and enjoy. The guide for our day in Sawato and to visit the Apartheid museum was extremely knowledgeable. This is our second trip with Kensington Tours. We will definitely use again.

We left everything to our tour rep, Louise Baer. She did a fantastic job. We had no expectations at all but were absolutely overwhelmed with our accommodations. We were treated so well by everyone. It was an unbelievable trip of a lifetime. Our drivers were fantastic. I felt so safe. Brilliant holiday. Thank you, Kensington!
