Traveling brings out the best in you, so why not put your best to good use? Come along with ME to WE and Kensington Tours in search of Africa’s legendary Big Five and explore some of the continent’s most renowned national parks. Explore the huge Ngorongoro Crater, visit the “Cradle of Mankind” at Olduvai Gorge, learn the ways of Maasai warriors, and help support communities through hands-on participation in local development projects.

After arriving in Nairobi, the adventure begins in the shadow of Kilimanjaro at Kenya’s famous Amboseli National Park with an afternoon game drive in search of the park’s main attraction: elephants. Next, explore the lush grasslands that carpet the interior of the Ngorongoro Crater on a privately guided 4x4 tour (keep an eye peeled for black rhinos, cheetahs, and bat-eared foxes) and your choice of optional activities in the surrounding area. Later, visit one of the world’s most important archaeological sites at Olduvai Gorge before exploring the sprawling Serengeti on a series of privately guided game drives in the hope of spotting giraffes, impalas, gazelles, and even lions. From there, the scene shifts to the Masai Mara Game Reserve and your first chance to spot the Big Five game — lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros — as well as zebras, vultures, wildebeests, and other animals on a series of private game drives. Last stop: ME to WE’s Bogani Cottages and Tented Camp to get settled before a visit to a nearby primary school and health clinic. At Bogani and the surrounding area, you’ll have all sorts of chances to learn about life among the Maasai, including beading with local women and a lesson in how Maasai warriors are trained, as well as the opportunity to volunteer and meet with the students of the Kisaruni all-girls secondary school. Giving back makes a good trip great. Explore your world, meet the people who make it special, and make it better with ME to WE and Kensington Tours. ... Show More »

Day 2: Nairobi - Amboseli

Sweeping across the Kenya-Tanzania border, the savannah grassland of Amboseli National Park is your playground for the day.  This morning you’ll meet with your guide and set out into the park for a chance to share the terrain with some of the world’s most elusive animals.  You have the option to do your game viewing either before or after check-in, so call upon the knowledge of your expert guide for their recommendation based on your arrival time and park hours.

This afternoon you’ll meet with your guide and head into Amboseli National Park.  The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species, and its other attractions include opportunities to meet the Masai Tribe’s people.  On a clear day, you’ll also have spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Accommodation: Serena Amboseli

In the heart of Amboseli National Park, touching the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, is where the Amboseli Serena Lodge lays its home. The 92 rooms are all equipped with en suite bathrooms and stunning views. Amboseli National Park provides the classic Hollywood image of Africa; patrolled by vast herds of elephant, shaded by the lush and feathered green of an acacia grove. Set in rolling savannah scenery, it is dwarfed by the presence of the pink tinged, snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Against this magnificent backdrop roam vast herds of elephant accompanied by a kaleidoscope of other fabulous beasts - lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, baboon, gazelle, hippo, and wildebeest to name but a few.

Day 4: Ngorongoro

You are provided with a personalized, experienced tracker-guide and private transportation today whilst exploring around the Ngorongoro National Park grounds.

Explore one of the most recognized wildlife conservation areas in Tanzania today.  Depart your camp or lodge in a privately driven vehicle, along with a local expert guide, for an approximately 20 to 30 minute drive towards the Ngorongoro Park Gate.  It will then take you another 20 minutes to reach the crater rim itself.   The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera.  This geological masterpiece was formed as a result of an extremely large volcanic explosion which caused the volcano to collapse in on itself, thus creating a crater.  The crater is roughly 20 kilometers wide and some 2000 feet deep, making the trip from crater floor to rim around 45 minutes by 4x4.  The extremely fertile crater floor is the reason why there is such a highly concentrated amount of wildlife here.  Over 20000 mammals call the crater home, including some of the only remaining black rhinos in the world.  The crater floor also boasts one of the highest carnivore densities in the world including large prides of lions, packs of hyenas and solitary predators like cheetahs and jackals.  A keen eye and expertly recommended search patterns from your guide, may help you spot some of the less common species like leopards, servals, and bat-eared foxes.

Day 5: Ngorongoro - Serengeti

Your guide will pick you up from the Ngorongoro Conservation area and drive you to the famous plains of the Serengeti.  On this drive you have the option of stopping at Olduvlai Gorge, the Serengeti welcome centre and lookout point, or stop for lunch at a picnic spot.  After entering Serengeti Park you will have the chance to enjoy game viewing as you drive through the park to your next accommodation. This drive takes 5 to 6 hours depending on the number of stops you make and how much game viewing you enjoy along the way.  Expect longer trip times during the rainy seasons.

The massive Olduvai Gorge or Oldupai Gorge is often referred to as “The Cradle of Mankind.”  Beginning in the eastern Serengeti plains, the gorge is roughly some 48 kilometers long.  Resulting from millions of years of natural erosion, this gorge boasts a steep-sided ravine that cuts and stretches its way through the Great Rift Valley along eastern Africa.  The gorge is named after a commonly used plant by the Masai people with the scientific name of Sansevieria-Ehrenbergii, or Oldupai for short.

Accommodation: Mbalageti Camp

Mbalageti Serengeti Camp features luxury tented chalets as well as lodge style standard rooms on the slopes of the rising Mwamweni Hill. Each room type is equipped with all the utilities of home, such as an en suite bathroom and a veranda with a stunning view. Dining takes place both in the bush, privately or with small groups, or in the dining tent, where local and continental cuisine forge new roots. English tea is served in the gardens with pastries daily. Activities range from spending some alone time in the loft reading books to a relaxing float in the tranquility pool, with the Serengeti plains as the backdrop.

Day 6: Serengeti

This morning’s African adventure begins with an exploratory game drive through Tanzania’s oldest and most recognized National Park, the Serengeti.  This location offers the most expansive game viewing in Tanzania. From predators to prey, great herds of grazing herbivores to tactically cunning packs of carnivores, life on the plains of the Serengeti can best be defined as a complete “circle of life.”  A photographic dream unfolds before your eyes as giraffes and elephants feast on tasty shrubbery, whilst impalas, gazelles and buffaloes dance carefully through the plains as to not become the latest meal for on-looking lions, cheetahs and hyenas.

Spend today searching out Impala, one of Africa's most beautiful and graceful animals. Previously thought to be part of the gazelle tribe, Impalas have been found to be so different that they are now classified as their own sub-family status. When frightened or startled the whole impala herd starts randomly leaping to confuse their predator. They can jump distances more than 10 meters (33 ft.) and 3 meters (9 ft.) high. Leopards, cheetah, lions and wild dogs prey on impala. Impala can reach running speeds of approximately 50 to 55 mph (80 to 90 km/h) to escape its predators. See if you can track these incredible animals!

Day 7: Serengeti - Isebania - Masai Mara

Your guide will drive you from Serengeti to the Isebania border.  Once there, you'll meet up with your Kenyan guide and continue into Kenya to the Masai Mara.  This full day commute includes game viewing in Serengeti and Masai Mara. The excursion will include a multi-hour drive across highway and bumpy patches of road to the border.  You'll have the option to enjoy a boxed lunch at Lake Victoria, visit a local fishing village, or simply drive straight to the border.

NOTE: This is a scenic drive through rural East Africa. A good part of this drive cuts across the national park so there is plenty of opportunities to still see amazing wildlife. Depending on your camp location and the stops on your game drive along the way, the drive to the Isebania Border is anywhere between 3-5 hours.

When traveling across the Kenyan-Tanzanian border a few things must occur.  Upon arrival to the Isebania Border Crossing, you will switch vehicles and guides according to the country you'll be entering.

You will be required to purchase a Visa; for Kenya it’s a per person cost of 50$ USD, and for Tanzania it's a per person cost of 100$ USD for American Citizens and 50$ USD for all other Nationalities.

Please Note: Visas must be paid in USD, and in CASH.  No bills can be older than 2006 as a local counterfeiting safeguard.  A Single entry Visa is valid for 3 months and can be used for multiple entries into Kenya and Tanzania.  It is also required that you have your Yellow Fever certification handy upon crossing.

Upon arrival to the Isebania Border Crossing, you will switch vehicles and guides according to the country you'll be entering.

After the Kenya/Tanzania border crossing, continue on to the Masai Mara with your Kenyan private guide and vehicle. This last section of driving will be partly on highway and partly by dirt road. The last hour by dirt road can be longer in rainy season. Enjoy game viewing on the way to your lodge. The approximate total travel time between Masai Mara and Serengeti can range between 6 to 9 hours depending on road conditions, traffic and weather.

Accommodation: Mara West

Day 8: Masai Mara

Just like the local wildlife, you’ll head out bright and early this morning, alongside an experienced tracker-guide for the day’s first game drive.  The eco-diversity and sheer size of the Masai Mara Game Reserve provides the necessary requirements to house a wide range of animal species.  The most recognized are known worldwide as the African Big 5, which includes the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Rhinoceros, Leopard, and the King of the beasts, the Lion.  The term Big 5 was coined by big-game hunters, as these species were the most difficult and dangerous to track and hunt.  Subsequently, the term was adopted by the tourism industry for marketing purposes, spinning a web of positivity opposed to the negative effect portrayed by the original terminology.  Numerous other species of bird and wildlife inhabit this dynamic location including Hyenas, Gazelles, Impalas, Giraffes, Zebras, Vultures, Cranes, Eagles, Falcons, and Ostriches.

Head out this afternoon, accompanied by an experienced tracker guide, on an exciting game viewing adventure.  Search some of the area’s wildlife hot-spots, determined by your guide, as have an understanding of the games daily routines through tracking.  Some wildlife, for instance the Leopard, is more difficult to spot than others. These spotted cats blend almost seamlessly into the tall grass and shrubbery, and are even more challenging to spot up in their favorite hangouts, the trees.  Your guide will take you to nearby watering holes, where on a hot day you’ll spot many bird and wildlife species, including the elusive Leopard.

Day 9: Masai Mara

Set out bright and early this morning on a "Migration" inspired game drive with your experienced guide.  Your journey today will take you into the thick of the Masai Mara plains, in search of some of the many grazing species that take part in the annual migration yearly, an event that has been going on for centuries.  Exceptional populations of Zebras, Gazelles, Impalas, and of course Wildebeests thunderously feed and migrate from the Serengeti and through the Mara area every year from July to October.

On today’s afternoon game drive, the choice is up to you: search for the Big 5 or expand your horizons to discover something different. The Masai Mara not only has a rich mix of animals – it also has an incredible array of bird life that includes almost 450 different species.

Serena Amboseli: Amboseli

In the heart of Amboseli National Park, touching the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, is where the Amboseli Serena Lodge lays its home. The 92 rooms are all equipped with en suite bathrooms and stunning views. Dining offers local cuisine and a choice of continental dishes, while specialty meals allow guests to get in touch with the environment.

  • Barbara Cox — August 03, 2017 — Africa

Christine did a fabulous job planning our safari. We followed the migration from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara staying in an assortment of tented camps. We loved ALL our guides and drivers (Duncan, Waziri and Charles).

  • Edward C. — March 24, 2017 — Africa

Our guide and driver were above and beyond our expectations.

  • Mary Ann B — March 17, 2017 — Africa

I would definitely recommend Kensington Tours. Very well pleased with everything they provided. Accommodations were excellent as well as tour guides. Gareth at Kensington was a tremendous help in planning our trip. Thank you so much Kensington for a great trip to South Africa.

  • Elizabeth E — February 07, 2017 — Africa

Both our guides from Rwanda to Tanzania were the best. Everything was FLAWLESS, the guides, transportation, the accommodations, the food, the safaris, etc. We actually went to the villagers home and met the kids who performed their native dance for us. It really was an emotional connection that was one of the highlights of the whole trip for us. Thanks so much for putting this all together for us!

  • Katie M. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Our Kensington Tour to Tanzania was excellent. All of our accommodations were top-notch, our flights were fantastic, and every single detail was taken care of. We were extremely impressed with how welcoming and knowledgeable our guides were.

  • Neal F. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Best trip ever. Sarah was a delight to work with and answered all of our questions and concerns professionally and courteously. It was a trip of a lifetime and everything was fantastic. Thank u Sarah and thank you Kensington

  • Rachel F. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Kensington Tours gave us a wonderful trip with the best guide and accommodations. They helped us book flights to avoid long drives and answered all of our questions going above and beyond. Thank you for all your help giving my family and I a trip of a lifetime! We cannot wait to go back to Africa and do it again using Kensington!

  • Jeffrey L. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

We wanted the full safari experience and Kensington was able to deliver it. We had the perfect mix of tents and lodges and honestly can say we saw about everything we could have in our time there. Our Kensington guide Elijah was very knowledgeable and friendly. He was basically a member of the family by the end of the trip. The entire trip was planned out perfectly. Thanks to Kensington and we hope to travel with them again in the future.

  • Sarah M. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

We had such a tremendous trip! We covered a lot of geography, plants and animals - both aquatic and land based. Every guide we had was knowledgeable and very personable. When Grootbos and then Madikwe found out it was my husband's birthday - our guide at Grootbos "Nita" arranged a private party for him (and us) and our chef and butler at Little Madikwe, Violet and Patience, baked cupcakes and got a small group together to sing happy birthday - in English and Afrikaans! We could never have seen so much on our own. The knowledge we gained about South African people, places, animals and history made this our trip of a lifetime! Thank you!

  • Sasha T. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

We had the most amazing time on our trip. Very grateful to Kensington for organizing all the pick ups and details so we didn't have to think or worry - we could just enjoy ourselves. Will absolutely recommend this trip to family and friends and hope to use Kensington again in the future for our next adventure. Thanks so much!
