Day 2: Nairobi - Masai Mara

This morning you'll meet up with your guide and head off to the Masai Mara. Approximate travel time is between five and six hours. Head directly into the park for game viewing and then return to the camp for late check-in or check-in first and then head out for an afternoon game drive. Chat with your guide for their recommendation based on your arrival time and park hours.

Enjoy a box lunch while you travel (included in tour price).

Accompanied by an experience guide, head out this afternoon on an exciting game viewing adventure. The locations visited will be determined by your expert guide as they have an intimate understanding of the daily routines of animals and how best to track them, and your afternoon excursion will visit several wildlife hot-spots with an aim to spot elusive animals such as the leopard. These spotted cats blend almost seamlessly into the tall grass and shrubbery, and are even more challenging to spot when in their favorite hangout, the trees. Exploring the region, your guide will take you to nearby watering holes where on a hot day you’ll spot many birds and mammals, including, with luck, the elusive leopard. After a thrilling afternoon game drive, you will be returned to your lodge in time to freshen up for a delicious safari dinner.

Day 3: Masai Mara

Just like the wildlife, your day’s adventure will begin bright and early this morning. Alongside an experienced tracker-guide, set out for the day’s first game drive and discover the dazzling bio-diversity of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The most recognized animals are known worldwide as the African Big 5, and this group includes the African elephant, Cape buffalo, rhinoceros, leopard, and the king of the beasts, the lion. The term “Big 5” was first coined by big-game hunters as a way to acknowledge that these species were the most difficult and dangerous to track and hunt, however, in subsequent years the term has been adopted and re-purposed by the tourism industry and painted in patently positive light, focusing now on the preservation and protection of these magnificent creatures. Numerous other species of bird and wildlife also inhabit this dynamic region, including hyenas, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, zebras, vultures, cranes, eagles, falcons, and ostriches, many of which you’ll spot on this morning drive through the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Spend the day soaking in the spectacle of the famous wildebeest migration. This annual migration takes place throughout the Serengeti and Masai Mara and is one of the safari highlights of Africa. The wildebeest migration moves in a basic clockwise direction throughout the year in the Serengeti eco-system and moves north into the Masai Mara from June/July through to September/October. Sightings cannot be guaranteed as the herds move according to availability of food sources and migration movements can be erratic. The herds are accompanied by zebra and Thomson's gazelle. With this plenty of plains game the local predators such as leopard, lion and hyena are never far behind.

Day 4: Masai Mara

The famed Masai Mara Game Reserve was named after the indigenous inhabitants of this land, the Maasai, and the provider of life to the area, the Mara River. Game viewing is almost guaranteed at some point along the Mara River, and your experienced tracker-guide will know all the best spots to explore to maximize your chances of seeing some of the many animals that call this land their home. Be sure to have your camera handy as amazing photo opportunities will present themselves; elephants on the riverbanks and hippos in shallow waters are common sights in this area.

On today’s afternoon game drive, the choice is up to you: search for the Big 5 or expand your horizons to discover something different. The Masai Mara not only has a rich mix of animals – it also has an incredible array of bird life that includes almost 450 different species.

Day 5: Masai Mara - Isebania - Serengeti

You`ll depart the Masai Mara Game Reserve today in a privately driven vehicle with guide and travel towards the Isebania border crossing. Enjoy game viewing or depart first thing, driving past towns and villages along the way. Upon arrival, your guide will arrange the necessary documentation for your entry into Tanzania. Please be aware that this portion of the drive can be long depending on rains as this is a dirt road. In dry season you can reach the border in two hours or less. Upon entry into Tanzania, you'll notice an improvement in stability and comfort as roadway heading toward the Serengeti National Park is newly paved.

When traveling across the Kenyan-Tanzanian border a few things must occur.  Upon arrival to the Isebania Border Crossing, you will switch vehicles and guides according to the country you'll be entering.

You will be required to purchase a Visa; for Kenya it’s a per person cost of 50$ USD, and for Tanzania it's a per person cost of 100$ USD for American Citizens and 50$ USD for all other Nationalities.

Please Note: Visas must be paid in USD, and in CASH.  No bills can be older than 2006 as a local counterfeiting safeguard.  A Single entry Visa is valid for 3 months and can be used for multiple entries into Kenya and Tanzania.  It is also required that you have your Yellow Fever certification handy upon crossing.

After you have crossed through Isebania Border you will switch vehicles and guides according to the country you'll be entering.

You`ll continue in your specialized, Tanzanian guided and driven vehicle towards the Serengeti Game Park. Please advise your guide if you would like to make any additional stops at shops and villages. Have your camera handy, as you enjoy some game viewing upon entry into the park whilst traveling to your Serengeti based lodging.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Upon entry into Tanzania, you`ll notice an improvement in stability and comfort as roadway heading toward the Serengeti National Park is newly paved.  Once you arrive in Serengeti you'll drive on dirt roads through the park and enjoy game viewing on your way to the lodge/camp. These dirt roads can be bumpy and/or muddy in rainy season. The approximate total travel time between Masai Mara and Serengeti can range between 6 to 9 hours depending on road conditions, traffic and weather.

Get ready for an afternoon to remember as you set out in the company of an experienced tracker-guide to explore the expanses of the Serengeti. The park is world renowned for its healthy populations of resident wildlife species, in particular the African Big 5 consisting of buffaloes, elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards and lions. Although sightings are considered a rarity, a small group of black rhinoceros also live within the park grounds. Heavy concentrations of topi, gazelle, waterbuck and Coke’s hartebeest ensure that local carnivores including cheetah, hyenas and African wild dog are ever present. The park is also home to more than 500 species of birds, including ostriches, crowned cranes, marabou storks and secretary birds; some of the most sought-after and photogenic birds on the planet.

Day 6: Serengeti

This morning, your African adventure begins with an exploratory game drive through Tanzania’s oldest and most recognized National Park, the Serengeti. A land of unparalleled game viewing, from great herds of grazing herbivores to tactically cunning packs of carnivores, life on the plains of the Serengeti truly epitomizes the “circle of life.” A paradise for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts alike, it is all but guaranteed that you will spot giraffes and elephants feasting on shrubbery, impalas, gazelles and buffaloes traipsing carefully through the plains to avoid being noticed by on-looking lions, cheetahs and hyenas, and a spectacular range of bird life flitting through the sky.

Spend today searching out Impala, one of Africa's most beautiful and graceful animals. Previously thought to be part of the gazelle tribe, Impalas have been found to be so different that they are now classified as their own sub-family status. When frightened or startled the whole impala herd starts randomly leaping to confuse their predator. They can jump distances more than 10 meters (33 ft.) and 3 meters (9 ft.) high. Leopards, cheetah, lions and wild dogs prey on impala. Impala can reach running speeds of approximately 50 to 55 mph (80 to 90 km/h) to escape its predators. See if you can track these incredible animals!

Day 7: Serengeti - Ngorongoro

The massive Olduvai Gorge, or Oldupai Gorge, is often referred to as “The Cradle of Mankind.” Beginning in the eastern Serengeti plains, the gorge is some 30 miles long and is the result of millions of years of natural erosion. The gorge features a steep-sided ravine that cuts its way through the Great Rift Valley stretching along eastern Africa, and is named after a commonly used plant by the Masai people with the scientific name of Sansevieria-Ehrenbergii, or Oldupai for short. This plant grows plentifully in the area, and is used for making bandages, rope, baskets, roofs and clothing. Today, discover the Olduvai Gorge firsthand alongside an expert local guide.

This African journey continues as you board a privately driven vehicle, accompanied by a local tracker-guide for your visit to the overwhelming large Ngorongoro Conversation Area. You’ll depart the Serengeti National Park grounds at a somewhat slower pace as to get in some more game-viewing. At the Serengeti Welcome Center you’ll have an opportunity to marvel at a panoramic view of the surrounding area from the lookout point. A stop for a picturesque picnic is also scheduled during this journey. Upon your arrival into the conservation area, you’ll head towards your overnight accommodation whilst taking in the overwhelming size of the Ngorongoro Crater. The approximate travel time may vary between five to six hours depending on weather conditions and the number of stops you’ve made along the way. During the heavy rainy season, longer travel times should be expected.

Accommodation: Acacia Farm Lodge

Acacia Farm Lodge is a romantic Country Lodge nestled in an active mixed farm located high on the spectacular Great Rift’s escarpment area with commanding panoramic views of the amazing Karatu farmlands and the nearby Ngorongoro forest area. Day 8: Ngorongoro

You are provided with a personalized, experienced tracker-guide and private transportation today whilst exploring around the Ngorongoro National Park grounds.

Today, set out to explore one of the most remarkable wildlife conservation areas in Tanzania; the Ngorongoro Crater. Departing from your camp in a privately driven vehicle alongside a local expert guide, you will make your way to the entrance of the park, and then drive a further 20 minutes to reach the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. This geological marvel was formed as a result of an extremely large volcanic explosion which caused the volcano to collapse on itself, thereby creating a gigantic crater. Roughly 12 miles wide and some 2000 feet deep, the trip from crater rim to floor takes approximately 45 minutes in a 4x4 vehicle. The extremely fertile crater floor has attracted incredibly dense populations of wildlife here, and at present over 25,000 large animals call the crater home, including some of the only remaining black rhinos in the world. The crater floor is also host to some of the highest concentrations of carnivores in the world, featuring large prides of lions, packs of hyenas and solitary predators like cheetahs and jackals. A keen eye paired with expertly procured search patterns from your guide is sure to help you spot a wide range of wildlife and perhaps some of the more elusive species like leopards, servals, and bat-eared foxes.

Enjoy a box lunch while you travel (included in tour price).
