Fragrant and colourful, Hunter’s’ luxuriant gardens create an idyllic setting for this opulent retreat in the heart of the Garden Route. Hunter’s Country House combines gracious elegance with sheer comfort and impeccable service with warm hospitality. Far from the madding crowd, yet conveniently close to a wide variety of leisure activities. Hunter’s is a member of Relais & Chateaux and Chaine des Rotisseurs. Ideally situated in the heart of the Garden Route between the coastal towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape, is the luxurious five star retreat, The Country House at Hunters. The grand dame of opulence and style is surrounded by enticing views into secret gardens abundant with butterflies and scented air.
The five individual thatched roofed Garden Suites are each privately positioned along the winding fairy-tale paths of the fragrant country gardens. The interiors join past and present, with modern plush textural fabrics in a calming palette of oyster shell, mushroom and soothing pale greens, off set by polished antique pieces and the twinkle of dainty chandeliers. Each Garden Cottage is approximately 45m2, has a fireplace, air conditioner, mini bar, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer and en suite bathroom with separate bath and shower and of course a garden patio with table and chairs for bird and butterfly spotting.
Offering 85 m2, the 2 Deluxe Pool Suites have a separate lounge and dining area with a large flat screen TV and French doors opening on to the stone patio and sundeck of the private pool and garden. The large and luxurious bedrooms lead on to a separate dressing room area and a large bathroom with twin basins, heated towel rail and an outdoor shower. As with all of the suites at Hunters Country House, the Deluxe Pool Suites also have a fireplace, air conditioner, mini bar, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer and en-suite bathroom with separate bath and shower and of course a garden patio with table and chairs for quiet outdoor dining and of course loungers at the pool side.
Since 1989, a dining experience at Hunter’s Country House has become one of the mythical must do’s of the Garden Route. In a time when “less has become less and less”, and minimalism is at its zenith, there is something so welcoming about a Grand Old Homestead filled with decadent fabrics and the sparkle of crystal chandeliers. Arriving in time to enjoy the crepuscular light of the rolling gardens is imperative. The award winning fare on offer from Executive Chef, Carmen Truter and her all girl team is sensitively and intelligently put together. With the luxury of a menu that changes weekly, Carmen is able to make use of ingredients that are available and seasonally ripe for short periods during the year. Flavour combining is Carmen’s hallmark and she and her team have their fingers firmly on the pulse of international trends, whilst remaining true to their deep South African roots.
There is a formal lounge and library with a fireplace, WiFi access in the main area, large pool with loungers, pamper treatments (on request) and a curio store. An array of activities surrounds The Country House including Birds of Eden, Elephant Interactions, Monkeyland, Tenikwa Wild Cat Sanctuary; whales, dolphin and seal watching, treetop canopy tours, golf and horse riding.
