Day 1: Cape Town

Upon arrival to Cape Town, you will be welcomed at the door of your aircraft by a local representative holding a sign with your name on it. Alongside your assistant, you will be directed through immigration, baggage collection and customs before being directed to your onward flight, airport hotel, or to your awaiting driver and vehicle.

To ensure a seamless experience, a documents package containing useful information including a detailed itinerary with pick-up and drop-off times, emergency contact information, and relevant e-tickets or vouchers will be provided to you.

Enjoy a private transfer between your hotel and Cape Town airport.

Accommodation: Table Bay Hotel

Sitting on the buzzing Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the Table Bay Hotel has one of the best locations in Cape Town, with views of Table Mountain, the harbor and notorious Robben Island. It was, in fact, the prison’s most famous former inmate who opened the hotel in 1997: then-President Nelson Mandela. The neo-Victorian architecture exudes old-world elegance, as does the attentive service, which extends to helicopter transfers, personal shopping, and the therapies at the Camelot Spa. Dining and cocktail options include The Atlantic, Camissa Brasserie, two bars and a lounge for afternoon tea. Don't miss the bronze statue honoring Oscar, a seal that often visited the waters by the hotel.

Day 2: Cape Town

One of the most spectacularly bio-diverse places on Earth, an estimated 1,500 unique species of plant-life are found on Table Mountain alone, many of which are endemic and found nowhere else on the planet. Ascend by cable car as the mist from the clouds open up to the main plateau while striking views of Cape Town come into crystal-clear focus. Now with a better understanding of the city’s layout, walk past Cape Town’s storied past as your guide recounts the colorful histories of the Houses of Parliament, the Castle of Good Hope (South Africa’s oldest building) and the well-tended Company Gardens. Bargain your way through the lively Greenmarket Square in search of souvenir while meeting local artisans along the way. As you enter another one of Cape Town’s famed stop at Bo-Kaap, learn how the Cape Malay community, with its cobbled streets and brightly colored houses became one of city’ most vibrant neighborhoods. There’s no better way of understanding local history than through your Capetonian guide. From here you have the choice of being dropped off at the V&A Waterfront to experience this landmark at your own pace, with its many shops, restaurants and pubs - or at your hotel to end the tour.

Day 3: Cape Town

After meeting your expert local guide in Cape Town, begin the day with a visit to one of the more popular leisure hubs for locals – the glorious beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay, where impressive white sand beaches hug the shoreline with the Twelve Apostles as a stunning backdrop. Learn about the fascinating history of this breathtaking land from your Capetonian guide as you begin the spectacular sea-side drive to the quaint village of Hout Bay. After a stop in the village, you will track along the extraordinary Chapman’s Peak Drive, known as one of the most picturesque roadways world-wide. With the flexibility to spend as little or as long as you would like in this region crammed with incredible panoramic lookouts, the benefits of having a private vehicle and guide truly come into play. Further along you will reach the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve where, at Cape Point, you will board a funicular or walk up the stairway that leads to the Cape Point Lighthouse; it is here that you will observe the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans while enjoying fantastic views of False Bay. Departing from Cape Point, head northward to Simon’s Town to enjoy lunch (included). Although the city is host to a number of tasty dining options, consider indulging in fresh-caught fish & chips, the town’s specialty. After a refreshing lunch and a bit of time to learn about Simon’s Town, set off with your camera ready to visit Boulders Beach, a nearby nature preserve that is home to a colony of African penguins. Wrapping up your day’s adventure, tour the idyllic Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, a sprawling park brimming with rare and exotic plant-life that is surely one the finest examples of botany the world over, before being returned to your hotel.

Day 4: Cape Town

“Colorful,” “Vibrant,” “Welcoming”… These are just a few of the words that come to mind when describing the township of Langa. To discover this firsthand, you need to walk, to hear, to smell, to touch and to taste the flavors of the township. Today, set out alongside an expert local for an authentic cultural experience in Langa designed to ignite all five senses. Exploring the daily lives and culture of the Xhosa people, you’ll learn that in Langa, the streets are the lifeblood of the community. It is in the streets where kids play soccer, local’s trade, and residents socialize and gather. As in many communities, mixing over a meal is an important aspect of township life, and for lunch you will have the opportunity to enjoy the fare at Mzoli’s Deli in Guguletu (weekdays only), likely Cape Town’s most popular eatery among locals. Here, South Africans of all creeds and background meet to enjoy a traditional braai (barbecue) over the chorus of cheers and chats. Weekends are exceptionally busy at the deli, filled with locals who dress to impress and enjoy delicious menu items, so a home-hosted lunch is offered as an alternative on Saturdays and Sundays in order to avoid the long queues. Available to be visited beginning in the afternoon, guests starting this excursion past lunchtime will instead have the opportunity to meet with the children from Happy Feet Youth Project. A charity initiative founding in 2007, it aims to provide children in the township with positive role models and a strong sense of belonging through dance. Wildly successful, you’ll have the chance to see their happy feet in action before carrying on through Langa. This tour winds down with a return transfer to your hotel.

Day 5: Cape Town - Franschhoek

Enjoy a private transfer between Cape Town and Franschhoek. Approximate travel time is one hour.

Guests at Babylonstreon can enjoy the following activities:

The Garden

In season, you can take part in the harvesting of fruit in the orchards or the pruning of the vines. Whatever the season, the garden is an ever-changing tapestry of fruit and vegetable plantings. Hotel guests are invited to join in the harvesting, pruning, planting or picking of the many fruits, herbs, nuts, spices and vegetables. There are maps for five different walks on the farm (available from Reception) and if you’re interested to learn more about the provenance of the garden, do join one of the garden tours that starts daily at 10h00. Booking is essential, so please enquire in advance at Reception.

Spa, Gym & Swimming Pool

After a workout at the gym overlooking the garden, guests can relax at the Garden Spa. The swimming pool is a restored farm reservoir and perfect for hot summer days.

Wine cellar

Please join one of the daily guided cellar tours, which will take you through the whole winemaking process, past the vineyards, through the olive press, production cellar and maturation cellar, and includes a wine tasting. The tour starts at the Tasting Room. The whole wine range is available for tasting at the Tasting Room.

Out and about on the farm

Every morning at 8h00, there is a guided walk around the farm with one of the gardeners, who takes guests up to the koppie (hill), through the fynbos area and the vlei (wetland), on to the citrus orchards and back past the dam. Or at sunset you could go for a run up to the Babylonstoren Hill or koppie yourself, or walk up to the dam to row in one of the canoes. There’s no better place to sample some of the excellent wines grown on the farm than at the Tasting Room, overlooking the Babylonstoren koppie. In the heat of summer, lounge in a hammock in the cool of the trees and read a book from the well-stocked library, or if you’re visiting in winter, curl up in front of a fire with a glass of red in hand.

Parent friendly

The farm is a paradise for children with the resident geese, chickens (where they can collect eggs) and the beloved donkeys, Meisiekind and Lulu. The donkeys live near to the Farm Shop and love nothing better than a snack of bread. Young guests can help feed the donkeys and to help harvest fruit and vegetables from the gardens, especially for the breakfast table. There are also complimentary mountain bikes for all hotel guests. They are located in the old pigsty near the entrance to the guest cottages. Helmets are recommended and available at reception.

Birdwatching

In addition to the domestic fowls, pigeons and more than 100 snail-harvesting ducks, Babylonstoren is also home to a myriad species of birds. So arm yourself with a pair of binoculars and spend some gentle hours in the garden. If in doubt, download the Sasol eBirds of Southern Africa mobile app, that with its detailed text, beautiful visuals and ability to play individual calls and songs is a great help in identifying different species.

Accommodation: Babylonstoren

Nestled in the heart of Franschhoek, Babylonstoren Hotel is an ideal spot from which to discover Franschhoek. From here, guests can enjoy easy access to all that the lively city has to offer. Babylonstoren has an exceptionally well-preserved werf.  It consists of a main residence, old cellar, koornhuis where wheat and hay was stored and row of service buildings, bell tower, ornate fowl pen and dove cote surrounded by the traditional low whitewashed walls.

Dining and cocktail options include The Atlantic, Camissa Brasserie, two bars and a lounge for afternoon tea.
