Day 2: Cape Town

Beat the crowds and start the day early with your private guide by visiting Cape Town’s most iconic landmark, Table Mountain. One of the most spectacularly bio-diverse places on Earth, an estimated 1,500 unique species of plant-life are found on Table Mountain alone, many of which are endemic and found nowhere else on the planet. Ascend by cable car as the mist from the clouds open up to the main plateau while striking views of Cape Town come into crystal-clear focus. Now with a better understanding of the city’s layout, walk past Cape Town’s storied past as your guide recounts the colorful histories of the Houses of Parliament, the Castle of Good Hope (South Africa’s oldest building) and the well-tended Company Gardens. Bargain your way through the lively Greenmarket Square in search of souvenir while meeting local artisans along the way. As you enter another one of Cape Town’s famed stop at Bo-Kaap, learn how the Cape Malay community, with its cobbled streets and brightly colored houses became one of city’ most vibrant neighborhoods. There’s no better way of understanding local history than through your Capetonian guide. From here you have the choice of being dropped off at the V&A Waterfront to experience this landmark at your own pace, with its many shops, restaurants and pubs - or at your hotel to end the tour. Should you choose to visit the waterfront, please speak to your Destination Expert for a range of recommendations for lunch.

The V&A Waterfront is surely one of the top attractions in Cape Town no matter your age, interests or group dynamic. To name a few highlights, the Two Oceans Aquarium is home is an incredible array of exotic, seemingly other-worldly creatures from the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Behind the aquarium, a small colony of Cape fur seals are almost always found on the docks, ready and waiting to pose for your camera. Chavonnes Battery, Cape Town’s first fortification, is now a museum with artifacts from centuries past. At the heart of the waterfront lies the Clock Tower of Cape Town and for those wanting to learn more about the harbor's history, a stop at the SA Maritime Museum is a must. For your shopping needs, a visit to the Victoria Wharf Shopping Center is the perfect stopover for designer items and authentic Cape souvenirs.

From street-side tapas to award winning cuisine, let our Destination Experts help you find the right dining option for your appetite. Some of our favorite spots include; Chef’s Warehouse, Bistro Sixteen82, The Foodbarn, Potluck Club, Plant, Shortmarket Club, Harbour House and Black Sheep Restaurant. To arrange reservations at any of these restaurants, speak to your Destination Expert. Please note: Reservations are subject to availability.

Day 3: Cape Town

After meeting your expert local guide in Cape Town, begin the day with a visit to one of the more popular leisure hubs for locals – the glorious beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay, where impressive white sand beaches hug the shoreline with the Twelve Apostles as a stunning backdrop. Learn about the fascinating history of this breathtaking land from your Capetonian guide as you begin the spectacular sea-side drive to the quaint village of Hout Bay. After a stop in the village, you will track along the extraordinary Chapman’s Peak Drive, known as one of the most picturesque roadways world-wide. With the flexibility to spend as little or as long as you would like in this region crammed with incredible panoramic lookouts, the benefits of having a private vehicle and guide truly come into play. Further along you will reach the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve where, at Cape Point, you will board a funicular or walk up the stairway that leads to the Cape Point Lighthouse; it is here that you will observe the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans while enjoying fantastic views of False Bay. Departing from Cape Point, head northward to Simon’s Town to enjoy lunch (included). Although the city is host to a number of tasty dining options, consider indulging in fresh-caught fish & chips, the town’s specialty. After a refreshing lunch and a bit of time to learn about Simon’s Town, set off with your camera ready to visit Boulders Beach, a nearby nature preserve that is home to a colony of African penguins. Wrapping up your day’s adventure, tour the idyllic Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, a sprawling park brimming with rare and exotic plant-life that is surely one the finest examples of botany the world over, before being returned to your hotel.

Sophisticated fine dining, Japanese-Peruvian modern fusion, fresh-caught south Atlantic seafood, and farm-to-table organic delights complimented by incredible views and award-winning, locally-sourced wines; Cape Town has it all. Among many options for high-end dining in Cape Town, the most highly recommended by our Destination Experts are: Aubergine, Nobu, La Colombe, Signal, Roundhouse, The Test Kitchen, Greenhouse and La Moutte. To arrange reservations at any of these restaurants, speak to your Destination Expert. Please note: Reservations are subject to availability.

Day 4: Cape Town

“Colorful,” “Vibrant,” “Welcoming”… These are just a few of the words that come to mind when describing the township of Langa. To discover this firsthand, you need to walk, to hear, to smell, to touch and to taste the flavors of the township. Today, set out alongside an expert local for an authentic cultural experience in Langa designed to ignite all five senses. Exploring the daily lives and culture of the Xhosa people, you’ll learn that in Langa, the streets are the lifeblood of the community. It is in the streets where kids play soccer, local’s trade, and residents socialize and gather. As in many communities, mixing over a meal is an important aspect of township life, and for lunch you will have the opportunity to enjoy the fare at Mzoli’s Deli in Guguletu (weekdays only), likely Cape Town’s most popular eatery among locals. Here, South Africans of all creeds and background meet to enjoy a traditional braai (barbecue) over the chorus of cheers and chats. Weekends are exceptionally busy at the deli, filled with locals who dress to impress and enjoy delicious menu items, so a home-hosted lunch is offered as an alternative on Saturdays and Sundays in order to avoid the long queues. Available to be visited beginning in the afternoon, guests starting this excursion past lunchtime will instead have the opportunity to meet with the children from Happy Feet Youth Project. A charity initiative founding in 2007, it aims to provide children in the township with positive role models and a strong sense of belonging through dance. Wildly successful, you’ll have the chance to see their happy feet in action before carrying on through Langa. This tour winds down with a return transfer to your hotel.

Day 5: Cape Town - Franschhoek

Enjoy a private transfer between Cape Town and Stellenboch by way of what is considered by many to be among the most scenic and picturesque routes in Africa. The drive begins as you depart the chic cityscape of Cape Town, winding through the heart of the Cape Winelands and onward around superb mountain ranges, vineyards and Cape Dutch-style homesteads. Along the popular N2 roadway you will drive to the heart of South Africa’s wine land, Stellenbosch. World renowned for its rich wine culture, beautifully rugged mountain backdrops and ever-changing, colorful vineyards, stroll through canal-lined avenues, shaded by ancient oak trees that surround the historic structures and buildings. Here you will enjoy a range of both award-winning and innovative wines before carrying onward to the gorgeous Helshoogte Pass en route to the town of Franschhoek. This dainty town dates back to the 17th century and was founded by the French Huguenots who settled here. Also billed as the "Gourmet Capital of South Africa," this charming community still boasts its French heritage through cuisine, culture, and architecture. Here you'll enjoy further wine tastings before being delivered to your hotel. Please note: not all wine tastings are included, additional tastings will require payment on-site.

Take an intimate wine-tasting and cellar tour and possibly meet the driving force behind the estate. If lucky, your behind-the-scenes experience may include grape picking or barrel tastings. Explore striking Stellenbosch, browsing through its wealth of appealing stores and museums, and sip local coffee blends in tempting cafes. Let the pairing of wine and olives awaken your senses before meandering through lush gardens bursting with life. Admire a collection of contemporary art, see the highest-growing vines and, from an elevated point, take in the stunning vistas over an old-world estate. In the afternoon, discover Franschhoek. Day 7: Franschhoek - Cape Town - Skukuza - Sabi Sands

Transfer between Franschhoek and Cape Town Airport with a private driver and vehicle.

Board a flight in Cape Town with direct service to Skukuza Airport. Approximate flight time is two hours and 30 minutes.

Please note, luggage restrictions apply to this regional flight: 1) Maximum of one checked bag, weighing up to 50 lbs (23 kg); Checked baggage cannot be larger than 62 square inches (158cm). 2) Guests can also bring one piece of carry-on luggage with a maximum weight of 17 lbs (8 kg). Guests may also bring one slimline laptop bag.

Transfer from Skukuza Airport en route to Lion Sands Ivory (River Lodge) in spectacular Sabi Sands. Approximate transfer time is 25 minutes.

Spectacular, untamed and coveted by outdoor enthusiasts, Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve is revered for good reason; it is one of the best locations in the world to spot game, including the Big 5. On the Sabi, massive elephants roam as families, black and white Rhinoceros graze the grasslands, Cape buffalo cautiously track along riverbeds, leopard’s prowl, and lions roar. Discover this unbound land for yourself as you head out on your first afternoon game drive alongside your ranger, tracker and other guests of the lodge. Explore this incredible land for a few hours with a camera in hand, gaining insights into the region as the sun sets. Before long you will find yourself back at the lodge, just in time to prepare for an outstanding safari dinner under the stars.

Accommodation: Lion Sands River Lodge

Located in the Southern Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Lion Sands is the only Reserve in South Africa to offer a safari in both the Sabie and Sand River ecosystems. The Reserve is family owned and managed by the 4th generation More Family. Their grandfather was one of the founding members of the Sabi Sand Wildtuin in 1948 which instilled a long history of community and conservation. Due to the ideal and  dynamic location, the River Lodge boasts a view of the Sabie River, which cannot be wasted, and is evident through the luxuriously thatched bedrooms featuring a private wooden viewing deck. With the quietly rambling river outside your room, you won't have to go far to see wildlife or to drink in the surrounding Sabi Sand Reserve whilst overlooking the world- famous Kruger National Park, all in one glance.

Day 8: Sabi Sands

Following breakfast, consider participating in an intimate walking tour of the bush alongside an armed ranger (for safety purposes). The goal of this hike is to learn about native flora, insects, birds, and the smaller animals that are often overlooked or underappreciated during formal game drives; the closer one looks at the bush, the more one realizes just how much there is to discover. Endemic and rare plants dot the landscape, insects keep the soil turning, and smaller mammals make meals of them. Discover this and more on a morning walking safari or simply relax at the lodge, cocktail in hand, and bask in the afternoon warmth as animals wander past your lodge.

Following lunch, venture back into the bush. Both the rare Black (hook-lipped) and White (square-lipped) rhinos wander the reserve and the afternoon is fantastic time to spot these powerful, beautiful and endangered creatures. If you are lucky enough, you may spot a crash of rhinos grazing as the sun dips below the horizon. After a few hours, you will return to the lodge to refresh before a freshly-prepared dinner.

Day 9: Sabi Sands

Before first light, embark on an early morning game drive with a tracker, ranger and fellow guests of the lodge. Sabi Sands is known as one of the best places on earth to spot the elusive leopard. Most commonly found in the morning and evening, lucky guests will find these beautiful cats lounging on tree limbs where they can be observed in safety. You will be out in the private reserve for a few hours before returning to the lodge for breakfast.

Night game drives allow you to observe nocturnal animals that are typically absent during the day, and a host of daylight animals which behave quite differently under the cover of darkness. Setting out as the sun sets, you may spot leopards in particular, and with a bit of luck, encounter these predators while on the hunt. During evening drives, trackers employ a powerful spotlight to search for and showcase predators and prey alike. Lions, African civets, honey badgers, aardvarks, bat-eared foxes, mongooses, genet cats and nocturnal birds like owls and nightjars are just some of the wildlife fortunate guests may spot this evening under the starlit African sky.

  • Annemarie R. — September 09, 2018 — Africa

Amanda was amazing. From Day 1 I felt I was speaking with someone who was well experienced and informed about planning an African Safari experience. She kept my budget in mind without comprising on the experience. Everything exceeded my expectations. She made it a lifetime memory and for the reason we shall return to Africa once again with the support of Kensington Tours. In today's complex world of travel, so much can go wrong but everything went seamlessly. Well done!

  • Susan T. — August 11, 2018 — Africa

The trip was spectacular. We managed to view more than 150 animals and birds. Each location was different - guide, accommodation, scenery and food. They were all our favorites but I would make special mention of Zelda North, our guide (and now friend) in South Africa. I recommend that anyone traveling to South Africa, Cape Town, in particular, make certain to request Zelda for your guide. She is just awesome and personalized our visit in a way that was perfectly suited to our particular likes and needs.
