Augusta de Mist Country Retreat

One of the most beautiful small hotels in Swellendam, on South Africa’s Garden Route, Augusta de Mist is a lifestyle retreat set on 1.5 ha of eclectic fynbos. This little hideaway from the hustle is conveniently located in the historic Drostdy Quarter of Swellendam and in typical Cape fashion. The homestead’s shutters are yellowwood and the ironmongery original, as indeed are the reed ceilings which are held together by 200+ year-old mud and clay. No wonder then that the homestead, Park Villa, is a National Monument.  Augusta de Mist in Swellendam on the Garden Route has a solid reputation for it’s breathtaking gardens, attention to detail, excellent service, interior design, luxury as well as some of the finest food in the Overberg.

For a unique dinner experience, book a table at ’Augusta’s African Kitchen’ with its focus on pan-African cuisine. The food reflects the variation and depth of the African continent. Produce is selected daily and a multi-course menu is offered on dinner evenings, with each course providing a celebration of African flavour, colour and provenance. Some of the vegetables and herbs are grown in Augusta de Mist’s own gardens and ceps are picked in the forest in season.

The pool area is perfect with a large willow tree and the kind of privacy that encourages you to shed the layers and have a cocktail. Pathways are always being added to maximise the garden experience and we encourage guests to explore the entire garden. There is no part of the garden which is off-limits or restricted. Seating is constantly being introduced in all the areas. Cappucino and tea is served on the front stoep from where one has a good view of the lawn, rose bushes, giant trees and the small croquet patch. Or have tea on the lawn itself!. Not forgetting the rough handmade picnic table on the hill or the small wine cellar garden, just perfect for a taste of the Cape’s finest.
