Day 3: Ruaha

When in one of Africa's biggest game spots, the thing to do is to get out and explore. At Kigelia Camp enjoy game drives on custom-built open game drive vehicles, perfect for traversing the beautiful and varied habitats of the park. Game drives are the best way to get up close to the multitude of wildlife that calls Ruaha home; big-maned lions, great herds of elephant, the handsome greater kudu or statuesque sable.

Between drives, you can also get out on foot. Being on your own two pegs gives you a totally different experience. You can stand beneath the towering baobab trees, feeling the smooth warm texture of it's mighty trunk beneath your fingers, or crouch to examine the antics of an ant lion as it hunts from a sandy cone in the dust. Walking gives you an appreciation of the tranquility, complexity and vastness of the African wilderness and we think it's one of the best things you can do on safari. Being in the company of a trained and experienced guide both ensures your safety and opens the door onto the wonders of your natural surroundings.

Enjoy morning breakfast in the bush and enjoying a sundowner in a beautiful spot. These things are rare treats in the safari day and something that you wouldn't do back home, which frankly is the only reason you need for doing them!

Kigelia's lovely location is also an attractive spot for local birdlife and many an early morning or afternoon can be spent wondering around camp with a pair of binoculars to see what's around. It doesn't have to be "all go" on safari...sometimes it's good to just be.

Whether you're out and about in an open game drive car, treading the game trails with your guide or wondering around the camp in search of birds, this is safari as its meant to be.

Accommodation: Beho Beho Game Reserve

Beho Beho is the first camp to be sited in The Selous, not on the banks, or the flood plains of the mighty Rufiji River, but in the cooler highlands so as to enjoy the 'cooling breezes' from which its name derives. Always designated as a 'private camp' it has fiercely protected its individuality and privileged location as one of the most 'magical' places it is possible to visit in safari Africa. Beho Beho has created the true 'essence' of a safari refuge, for safari travellers who have 'been there and done that' throughout the big game countries of Africa now there is a camp that takes the 'best' of each safari and combines it into one remarkable experience. A luxurious base camp from which to explore on foot, by boat or by open safari cruiser the splendours of one of the largest game preserves in the world.

Day 6: Selous

Guests staying at Beho Beho Game Reserve can enjoy a variety of optional activities whilst in Selous. The swimming pool at Beho Beho has magnificent views along the Kipalala valley. There are many areas offering private sunbathing or quiet relaxation in the shade.  A variety of safari's are made available including 4-wheel drive game drives, walking safari's and visits to Lake Tagalala and Maji Moto. All of the safari's in the Selous game reserve are accompanied by an armed game scout.

From Beho Beho it is possible to explore a unique array of environmental biodiversity, from the riverine forests, miombo woodlands and plains to the fascinating lake regions of Tagalala and Mwanze.

The specialty of the camp is to go on guided and guarded walking safaris, either early mornings or late afternoons avoiding the intense heat of the day when both animals and humans tend to look for suitable shade. The morning walks commence at 6:30am and last from three to five hours including a stop for breakfast at a shady spot. Afternoon walks can also be very rewarding, leaving at 4:30pm for about two hours to meet a vehicle well supplied with welcome 'sundowner' drinks, before the darkness comes and it is time to drive back to camp. Beho Beho is one of the few safari camps where it is possible to walk straight from the camp itself, with a variety of routes to hippo pools, First World War trenches, the grave of Frederick Courtney Selous, for who the reserve was named, and several easy or more demanding trails known only to our walking guides.

Beho Beho also has a number of boats stationed at Lake Tagalala, about 50 minutes drive away from the camp. This excursion, usually done in the morning, gives a very close encounter with the resident hippos and crocodiles as well as an amazing number of bird species, culminating in breakfast under a shady tree and a walk to the nearby hot springs for a therapeutic swim in the warm mineral waters.

But it is not always necessary to leave the camp to witness excellent game viewing as there is always something 'happening' around Beho Beho. The camp appears to be on a crossroads of animal migratory routes, the animals seeming to appear totally unconcerned about the human habitation. It is not unusual to see elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, impala, giraffe, wild dog, wart hog, hippo, baboon or hyena to name just a few, wandering through the camp at any time of the day or night. The flood lit water hole in front of the camp also enjoys a lot of activity, especially in the dry season, and boasts lion, leopard, serval and genet cats with pleasing regularity. The swimming pool at Beho Beho has magnificent views along the Kipalala valley. There are also many areas offering private sunbathing or quiet relaxation in the shade.

Day 7: Selous

Ask your lodge about going out on boat safari. Selous is renowned for its lakes and rivers; giant water courses which offer marvelous opportunities to explore the heart of the reserve. These boat trips allow you to see hippos, crocodiles, birdlife, and other game. Watch in fascination as hunter seeks prey by the water's edge.

The Selous is one of the last remaining pristine true wilderness areas in the world. Located in southern Tanzania, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest fauna reserves of the world and one of Tanzania's treasures. With very few human habitants, you will have the chance to view Africa as the original explorers did. Track and seek out game each day with others from your lodge: elephants, black rhino, cheetah, giraffe, hippos, African Wild Dog cape buffalo and crocodiles just to name a few!

Selous Game Reserve was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, and has since become one of the largest conservation areas on the planet. Home to large numbers of crocodiles, cheetahs, giraffes, elephants and rhinos, as well as a variety of birdlife, time spent in Selous is often extremely rewarding.

  • Edward C. — March 24, 2017 — Africa

Our guide and driver were above and beyond our expectations.

  • Mary Ann B — March 17, 2017 — Africa

I would definitely recommend Kensington Tours. Very well pleased with everything they provided. Accommodations were excellent as well as tour guides. Gareth at Kensington was a tremendous help in planning our trip. Thank you so much Kensington for a great trip to South Africa.

  • Elizabeth E — February 07, 2017 — Africa

Both our guides from Rwanda to Tanzania were the best. Everything was FLAWLESS, the guides, transportation, the accommodations, the food, the safaris, etc. We actually went to the villagers home and met the kids who performed their native dance for us. It really was an emotional connection that was one of the highlights of the whole trip for us. Thanks so much for putting this all together for us!

  • Katie M. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Our Kensington Tour to Tanzania was excellent. All of our accommodations were top-notch, our flights were fantastic, and every single detail was taken care of. We were extremely impressed with how welcoming and knowledgeable our guides were.

  • Neal F. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Best trip ever. Sarah was a delight to work with and answered all of our questions and concerns professionally and courteously. It was a trip of a lifetime and everything was fantastic. Thank u Sarah and thank you Kensington

  • Rachel F. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

Kensington Tours gave us a wonderful trip with the best guide and accommodations. They helped us book flights to avoid long drives and answered all of our questions going above and beyond. Thank you for all your help giving my family and I a trip of a lifetime! We cannot wait to go back to Africa and do it again using Kensington!

  • Jeffrey L. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

We wanted the full safari experience and Kensington was able to deliver it. We had the perfect mix of tents and lodges and honestly can say we saw about everything we could have in our time there. Our Kensington guide Elijah was very knowledgeable and friendly. He was basically a member of the family by the end of the trip. The entire trip was planned out perfectly. Thanks to Kensington and we hope to travel with them again in the future.

  • Sarah M. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

We had such a tremendous trip! We covered a lot of geography, plants and animals - both aquatic and land based. Every guide we had was knowledgeable and very personable. When Grootbos and then Madikwe found out it was my husband's birthday - our guide at Grootbos "Nita" arranged a private party for him (and us) and our chef and butler at Little Madikwe, Violet and Patience, baked cupcakes and got a small group together to sing happy birthday - in English and Afrikaans! We could never have seen so much on our own. The knowledge we gained about South African people, places, animals and history made this our trip of a lifetime! Thank you!

  • Sasha T. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

We had the most amazing time on our trip. Very grateful to Kensington for organizing all the pick ups and details so we didn't have to think or worry - we could just enjoy ourselves. Will absolutely recommend this trip to family and friends and hope to use Kensington again in the future for our next adventure. Thanks so much!

  • Kristin C. — August 10, 2016 — Africa

From the minute we landed, everything was taken care of. Every driver and guide we had were very friendly and efficient. The highlight of our trip was our stay at Kapama Southern Camp, everything about this place was amazing. We were all sad to leave and would love to return there in the future. Would highly recommend booking as many people there as possible.
