Day 4: Hwange National Park

Home to countless elephant, numerous lion prides and rare antelope such as sable and roan, it offers excellent game spotting opportunities around the many waterholes found throughout the Park. Your stay includes two game drives daily with highly qualified rangers as well as bush walk options.

Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe, an area of 14,651km2. Formerly occupied by the San bushmen, the Nhanzwa, and latterly the royal hunting ground for Matabele king, Mzilikazi, the area was finally gazetted for wildlife conservation in 1928. The park is close to the edge of the Kalahari desert, a region with little water and very sparse, xerophile vegetation. Most of the park is underlain by Kalahari Sands. As a result of it's location, seasonal wetlands form grasslands in this area. In areas without rivers, grassy pan depressions and pans have formed. Some of these pans fill with rainwater, while others are fed by natural groundwater seeps. Many of the pans are additionally supplied by water pumped from underground by park authorities. The park has a huge diversity of landscapes, vegitation, and game viewing.

A haven for over 100 mammal and 400 bird species, the park protects populations of all of Zimbabwe’s endangered species, elephants numbering in excess of 20,000 (up from around 4,000 when the park was proclaimed). Large prides of lion and buffalo are frequently seen here and you have a good chance of spotting leopard and rhino in addition to cheetah and spotted hyena. The wild and woolly brown hyena also occurs here and is something of a rarity. It is the only protected area where gemsbok and brown hyena occur in reasonable numbers. The population of African wild dogs to be found in Hwange is thought to be of one of the larger surviving groups in Africa today. Other game include herds of zebra, African water buffalo, impala species, giraffe and a wide variety of birds, just to name a few.

Head out today with your expert guide for another game experience - this time by foot! Hwange is great for guided bush walks accompanied by qualified and professional guides. The park is littered with colours from all its seasonal wild flowers that emerge as the first rains begin, and as the grass dries out, the large herds of buffalo, zebra and elephant are in abundance.

  • Sharon M. — December 16, 2018 — Africa

This was the trip of a lifetime. I would not have gotten as much out of the trip if it were not for Evan, Kensington’s accommodations, and the guides! I had an amazing time on Safari, at Victoria Falls, and in Cape Town. I can’t remember all of the names of my guides but they were all knowledgeable and passionate not only about their respective countries, but passionate about their field. I felt safe and received the best education from all of them which is one of the main goals of my trips. Thank you Kensington!

  • Norah G. — September 05, 2018 — Africa

I thought the tour was so well planned, the accommodations were amazing, and the guides were so knowledgeable. I just want to go back!

  • Jeanne E. — January 12, 2019 — Africa

Our guide Youssef was very knowledgeable and taught us so much about Morocco. Everything went smoothly and he executed the plan with expertise. My husband and I were very pleased with the itinerary, the accommodations that had to be made to it, and the surprises that Youssef made happen. He added a personal touch that was above and beyond. Our driver Mohamed is the consummate professional - way beyond expectations.

  • Annemarie R. — September 09, 2018 — Africa

Amanda was amazing. From Day 1 I felt I was speaking with someone who was well experienced and informed about planning an African Safari experience. She kept my budget in mind without comprising on the experience. Everything exceeded my expectations. She made it a lifetime memory and for the reason we shall return to Africa once again with the support of Kensington Tours. In today's complex world of travel, so much can go wrong but everything went seamlessly. Well done!

One of our best trips ever! We had a phenomenal time and everything went off without a hitch.

  • Stephen B. — August 16, 2018 — Africa

The trip was spectacular. We managed to view more than 150 animals and birds. Each location was different - guide, accommodation, scenery and food. They were all our favorites but I would make special mention of Zelda North, our guide (and now friend) in South Africa. I recommend that anyone traveling to South Africa, Cape Town, in particular, make certain to request Zelda for your guide. She is just awesome and personalized our visit in a way that was perfectly suited to our particular likes and needs.
