The seat of a once-mighty empire that held much of Southeast Asia under its sway, the story of Cambodia and Laos is one of age-old majesty, common struggle, and unyielding strength. Angkor Wat deservedly dominated both the horizon and the imagination, but the real Khmer legacy lives beyond the temple walls. Join us on this unique Explorers Club experience and introduce yourself to a side of this captivating region that most others miss.

It starts in Siem Reap, where you’ll end your first day with a lecture from a local Angkor archaeologist. With a private guide, you’ll embark the next morning on a full day’s exploration of the world’s largest religious monument: Angkor Wat. Later, take a private tour of Banteay Srei, a small red-sandstone temple famed for its intricate carvings, and visit Mechrey, a floating village on the shores of the Tonlé Sap. The next day, you'll take a unique, low-flying, small aircraft flight over Angkor and the surrounding countryside. Pending local government restrictions, you’ll have the potential option to add a visit to an active archaeological dig (and possibly participate yourself, weather and safety permitting) before settling in for a traditional dinner in the Cambodian countryside. ... A dazzling mix of architectural styles from across several centuries and a culinary scene the blends local flavors with French flair, Luang Prabang is justifiably one of Laos’ most famous places. With the assistance of a specialist guide, you’ll devote your first full day in Laos to exploring the UNESCO-protected town center of Luang Prabang, marveling at its meticulously preserved Buddhist temples and pagodas, followed by a private Baci ceremony, a spiritual “calling of the soul.” Next, rise early for a sai bath ritual and a visit to a local market before learning about traditional arts before moving to Kuang Si Falls, a gorgeous three-tiered waterfall.

True Khmer history can’t be learned from any book. You’ll find it carved into the walls of temples, sown in the endless rice fields, and written in the smiles of the disarmingly friendly people you meet. To understand, you must feel it.

Day 2: Siem Reap

Today your private guide and driver, will show you a full day of historical adventures, as you're being whisked away to see the breathtaking architecture and natural setting of one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. The different sites of Angkor cover around 250 square miles, including the forested areas. It features ruins dating back to a period between the 9th and 15th century, all sculpted in the distinctive Khmer style. As you approach the park, you will first see the South Gate of Angkor Thom. A walk along a half a mile trail past the walls that lead to a hidden temple is optional, but your guide will definitely ensure that you see the amazing temple areas of Bayon and Baphoun, as well as the Terrace of Elephants and Leper King. Take a break and have lunch inside the park before you head over to the grey-stoned jungle temple of Ta Phrom. Here you enter a mysterious world, as tree stumps seem to grow out of the temple and roots crawl up its walls. For many people this is the highlight of Angkor. The most famous part of the park is, of course, Angkor Wat, known to visitors around the world. Finish the tour with a peaceful sunset, as shades of violets, oranges, and pinks spread across the sky. This private tour includes transportation, an English-speaking guide, lunch, water, and towels.

Day 3: Siem Reap

This morning you will visit Banteay Srei, which for many years was off limits due to its remote location and Khmer Rouge activity in the area. Built in the late 10th century and dedicated to Shiva, Bantrey Srei's pink limestone walls contain the best bas-reliefs of any temple at Angkor. If you are interested, you may choose to visit the Cambodian Landmine Museum, Prevention and Rehabilitation Center. It is estimated that more than 110 million land mines are buried throughout the world. Buried within Afghanistan, Angola, Iraq, Kuwait and Cambodia are the largest concentrations of land mines. In Cambodia, efforts at clearing mines around Angkor Wat and the major tourist sites have been successful. However, millions of mines remain buried and significantly impact the lives of the Cambodian people. Learn about the center's efforts and work on this visit. Moreover, Continue to visit Preah Khan, with its labyrinth of grey decaying stone courtyards that are slowly being reclaimed by the jungle. Large kapok trees extend limbs and roots throughout the carved stone work; while raucous parrots screech and monkeys keep watch to complete a surreal picture. Afterwards, enjoy your lunch at a delicious local restaurant in town.

This afternoon, enjoy a countryside trip to the floating village of Mechrey Village on the Tonle Sap Lake. Your first stop on the way is at Ampil Peam and you can stroll through this traditional village where locals still live the same way as they have for centuries. Upon arrival at Mechrey, you will board a boat to explore the area. Your guide will explain the biodiversity of the area and discuss the lake’s importance for the livelihood of thousands of locals. Tonle Sap, meaning "Great Lake" has been declared a UNESCO biosphere. The meaning behind the name is also the inspiration for the lake and river system. You will learn how its flow changes direction twice a year, according to the season. Depending on the length of your visit, you can enjoy a golden sunset on the lake with a few cold beers and soft drinks. This private tour includes a private transportation, an English-speaking guide, entrance fees, boat trip, drinks, water and towels.

Day 4: Siem Reap

Enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Soar high above the temples of Angkor, Tonle Sap Lake and the surrounding countryside of the Siem Reap area. Take a flight with Captain Eddie, a highly experienced American pilot with thousands of flight hours in the Cambodian skies aboard his British-made Quik GT-450 microlight. This special and unique experience allows you to experience the temples and surrounding area “slow and low”, averaging around 100 km/hour and sometimes flying as low as 10 meters above ground. Microlight flights allow you to be open to the elements and truly experience Siem Reap from above, up close and personal.

Optional (Not Included):

This morning, you’ll have the unique opportunity to apply what you’ve learned thus far by participating in an active archaeological dig, alongside experts in the field.

Please note, active participation or viewing of current temple restoration projects is heavily restricted by the local government and availability can change at short notice, and is therefore not included in your trip pricing. Additionally, the field work carried out by archaeologists such as Dr. Damian Evans is also subject to local government restrictions and, at this stage, the next phase is not contemplated until later in 2018. If this activity is of interest, please speak with your travel consultant about the possibility of adding this to your travel program.

Day 6: Luang Prabang

This morning, enjoy a historical and cultural insight into the rich architectural history of the majestic UNESCO World Heritage Town of Luang Prabang. Begin the day by meeting Francis Engelmann who will share with you his deep knowledge of Lao culture. He has been researching ancient sites in Laos for more than 20 years and he was involved in the studies preparing the nomination of Luang Prabang as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. He was also part of the team of the Heritage House, the conservation authority of Luang Prabang which provides guidelines for the management of Luang Prabang.

After the meeting, your guide will show you the historic and charming World Heritage Town. Begin your journey at the most popular of temples – Wat Xieng Thong. This 500-year-old temple is an exquisite example of the classic Luang Prabang style. Close by are other astounding temples such as Wat Mai and Wat Visoun.

From here, explore small side streets, along back alleys and through temples. It’s a city that could have been designed with slow travel in mind as the walking tour allows you to soak up the ambiance and lets you appreciate the hidden charms of Luang Prabang. Through your guide, feel free to ask the locals questions as they go about their daily lives.

A tasty lunch is served at the non-profit and training restaurant Khai Paen. Here, underprivileged Lao youths receive hands-on training in hospitality and English. The students will prepare a delicious and creative lunch using local ingredients and flavors. A good way to get to know the Lao cuisine.

After lunch, visit the National Museum, which is the former Royal Palace. Relics from Laos’ royalist past remain here. A highlight of the museum is the Prabang, a golden Buddha from Cambodia which gives the town its name. It also houses gifts from heads of state, among them a moon rock from Richard Nixon, interestingly, given in 1972, about the same time the U.S. bombing of Laos reached its peak.

Overlooking the palace is Phousi Mountain. It is said that those who do not climb the 328 steps up have not really made it to the city. As an optional, venture up the hill and be rewarded with remarkable views of the area.

Return to your hotel to refresh before you will be treated to the refined grace of a private Baci ceremony at a small village called Ban Khomkhuang. These gentle villagers led by the Nai Ban (village chief) offer visitors tidings of good luck and fortune for their life and travels by gently tying cotton cords symbolizing luck, friendship and good health around your wrists. The Baci ceremony will be held at a private family home.

Day 7: Luang Prabang

If you have no problems to get up at dawn, your private guide will accompany you to witness the sacred ritual of monks on their alms rounds, known locally as Sai Bath. Long lines of barefoot monks go through the streets to receive their morning rice from the local villagers.

Afterwards, visit the lively Morning Market and be immersed in local lifestyle, observing locals who are doing their grocery shopping. Return to your hotel for breakfast.

PLEASE NOTE: In keeping with the respectful stance regarding local cultures, please observe this sacred ritual from a respectful distance. If you take photographs, do not use a flash and try not to let this interfere with this highly revered ritual.

After breakfast, meet your private guide and professional driver to start the day with a visit to the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center, a museum dedicated to the ethnic minorities of Laos. Here, meet the Director who will give a tour of the museum. Afterwards, the Director of the museum will lead a 1 hour seminar with the focus on “Ethnic diversity and cultural change in Laos”.

Then drive into the peaceful countryside, to explore several villages of ethnic minorities yourself. Discover a Hmong, a Khmu, and a Lowland Lao village and compare the different life styles, traditions and religions. In Ban Pano and Ban Long Lao, local guides from these villages will show you around. You will have the chance to get to see houses from inside, traditional dresses and explanations about different craft productions or other common work routines. The villagers are grateful for this additional income and they are proud to welcome visitors from far away. A traditional Lao picnic lunch will be served.

Continue on to the Kuang Si Waterfalls. At the falls, crystal water cascades into idyllic turquoise pools. Bring a bathing suit if you would like to swim! Then transfer back to Luang Prabang and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Kensington did a fantastic job of arranging our tour to South Korea and Japan. The guides were all knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tour involved a lot of coordinating different guides, train and subway schedules and the schedules of places we were visiting. They even arranged for a couple of Uber drivers to take us to airports. Everything was flawless.

  • Elizabeth B — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Hotels were all outstanding. Especially recommend Gora Kadan for anyone interested in a deluxe ryokan!! Ten stars to that gorgeous place. All transfers, tickets and services worked perfectly and that’s not a small feat, very appreciated.

Our guide in Beijing Jerry was absolutely fantastic!!!! He was extremely knowledgeable and had a great personality. He was able to quickly asses the level of detail we wanted to hear and provided an excellent tour experience. He was very attentive to all our needs, ensured that we were understood the local culture and went out of his way to ensure that when we were not with him we still would have a great experience. Our driver Mr. Wong was also very competent and an extremely safe driver, we never felt nervous at all with him behind the wheel. Overall just a fabulous tour and experience!!!
