Day 2: Siem Reap

In the morning you will be met by your local guide at your hotel with high-quality mountain bikes to bike through the Siem Reap countryside. Pedaling along quiet trails, through rice fields and small villages, your tour guide will take you to a local market where the colours and smells of raw meat, vegetables, fish, fruits, underscored by the constant yelling of stallholders, will make for an exciting experience. After this visit to the local market, you are going to cycle to a local family’s house where you will learn to cook some signature dishes, to be enjoyed together at lunch. After a short rest and a glass of sugar cane juice, a refreshingly sweet drink poured over ice, you can help to prepare a Khmer meal which you will later offer to the monks at a local pagoda. Buddhist monks live away from their families and are not allowed to have regular jobs. They depend on the faith and charity of the local people. After you have finished your Khmer cooking, the chef and his wife will show you how to pack the meal and some rice into a banana leaf. A short walk takes us to the pagoda where the monks live so you can offer the alms. Afterwards, the monk will give you a blessing, and you can ask him everything you like to know regarding Cambodian culture and Buddhism. This private tour includes a private tuk-tuk transfer, an English-speaking guide, cooking with local family & lunch, cool water, and towel.

Bike and taste Siem Reap’s vibrant food culture when it is at its most exciting, in the evening just before sunset. At the end of each day Siem Reap’s food stalls and eateries come alive, bursting with weird and wonderful gastronomic delights, as workers prepare to head home and visitors await evening events and dinner. Starting at 3pm, your first stop is at a stall famous for its BBQ beef. After a quick nibble you ride past homes and businesses to enjoy a special delicacy of char-grilled giant snails, with a tofu option available for the less adventurous. Enjoy the bustle of smaller neighborhood markets and children going home from school, until you arrive at one of the most popular local food night markets, awash with colour and tasty treats. After that delicious detour ride through some typical Cambodian countryside to the local fairground where, as the sun sets,  you can munch your way through stalls serving up lotus buds, deep fried insects and a wonderful array of sweet treats as well as fruits which have no name in English! After a short transfer, conclude your foodie fantasy with a very special dinner with members of a local community in their vegetable garden. Enjoy the conversation over a truly traditional family meal washed down with rice wine and couple of cool beers for good measure. At the close of the ride an air-conditioned van is waiting to transport you back to Siem Reap town, arriving around 7:30pm, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the evening’s cultural activities in town.

Kensington did a fantastic job of arranging our tour to South Korea and Japan. The guides were all knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tour involved a lot of coordinating different guides, train and subway schedules and the schedules of places we were visiting. They even arranged for a couple of Uber drivers to take us to airports. Everything was flawless.

  • Elizabeth B — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Hotels were all outstanding. Especially recommend Gora Kadan for anyone interested in a deluxe ryokan!! Ten stars to that gorgeous place. All transfers, tickets and services worked perfectly and that’s not a small feat, very appreciated.

Because we traveled in several cities we had many different guides. They were all very good, with some being outstanding. We would like to especially commend our Beijing guide, Jerry Wang, for his expert and very personalized guidance.

  • Bruce H — November 07, 2017 — Asia

Our guide in Beijing Jerry was absolutely fantastic!!!! He was extremely knowledgeable and had a great personality. He was able to quickly asses the level of detail we wanted to hear and provided an excellent tour experience. He was very attentive to all our needs, ensured that we were understood the local culture and went out of his way to ensure that when we were not with him we still would have a great experience. Our driver Mr. Wong was also very competent and an extremely safe driver, we never felt nervous at all with him behind the wheel. Overall just a fabulous tour and experience!!!
